BEIJING, Sept. 23 (Xinhuanet) -- China is ready to enhance friendly cooperation with South Africa, said Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Dai Bingguo Thursday.

Dai made the remarks in meeting with South African Deputy Foreign Minister Aziz Pahad, who is visiting China.

China regards South Africa as a sincere friend and an important strategic cooperative partner, said Dai. China will step up coordination with South Africa in bilateral relations and international affairs, he added.

Pahad said China has played an important role in international affairs, and the development of Africa including South Africa is closely linked with China's support.

Pahad said South Africa will as always deepen strategic partnership with China in an all-round way. Enditem

Why, you're not suggesting there could be anything nefarious in the Chicom's interest in shipping choke points, are you?  I'm sure they have nothing but the best wishes and a hearty "good will towards men" in their hearts.  Prolly just protecting everyone from pirates is all...

I don't understand why it so surprising that another nation would be looking out for their own interest. So far, much to my chagrin, I find no evidence of Chinese troops being placed in the countries they do business with. Neither do I hear bases be built or prepositioning of military assets. I am concerned about what is happening between Japan and China, but even there not a shot has been fired. I do believe they are an aggressive nation, and they have the most evil form of government. However, I can't find a justification yet for all the hysteria surrounding them. Even with all the bluster between China and Taiwan, not fired there as well. I want to believe they are the menace of the 21st Century, but I need more than just a military buildup and the pursuit of economic self interest.

The Chinese have military troops in Sudan and Zimbabwe, but none in SA I think. And those troops are used to guard oil refineries/pipelines and other commercial interests in those 2 countries.
