Dayton says he'll vote not to confirm Roberts (NO!?)

U.S. Sen. Mark Dayton announced Friday that he would vote against confirming John Roberts as chief justice of the U.S. Supreme Court, but he predicted that the Senate will approve the appointment next week by a vote of about 70 to 30.

At a State Capitol news conference, Dayton, a DFLer who is not seeking reelection in 2006, listed three reasons for his decision:

•Roberts' refusal to answer even basic questions about his judicial philosophy and social views in Senate hearings.

•The White House's refusal to release information on Roberts' record as a deputy solicitor general under President George H.W. Bush.

•Roberts' refusal to apologize for controversial statements such as referring to undocumented Mexican immigrants in a legal brief as "illegal amigos."

He is nearly as embarrassing as Wellstone. I wear my Minnesota background with pride here in South Texas -- with my UofM brackets around the plates on my truck, my UofM polo shirt worn to work and my incredible habit of using reeeeaaaalllly long "O" sounds (normally accompanied by a 'you betcha').

But Dayton...what a loser...

This is news for what reason? I think if he voted yes it would be newsworthy. Just the press using him as their opinion and voice.

"Roberts' refusal to answer even basic questions about his judicial philosophy and social views in Senate hearings."

And Ruth Bader Ginsburg spilled her guts for Senator Patrick Leahy circa 1993, when questioned. Please! You're not supposed to answer even the most basic of questions. It's all part of it -- it's politics, ya know.

Excellent. OSU game is getting boring. It's all OSU. I'm happy because I'm an OSU fan, but Iowa should be giving OSU some competition. I hate games where one team dominates every quarter. B-O-R-I-N-G!!!!! LOL

He showed amazing courage, coming out from under his desk to make this statement, before slithering back under cover.

"Roberts' refusal to apologize for controversial statements such as referring to undocumented Mexican immigrants in a legal brief as "illegal amigos."

----

"illegal 'friends' is controversial? Hmm, how come that is controversial but that phony way the NPR reporters nasalate the N in Spanish words to sounds like authentic mexicans is not? ... the latter is even more patronizing.

Vote no because "Roberts failed to be politically correct 20 years ago" and "Roberts failed to emote on cue to a vapid Senator's questioning" (Feinstein)

What a bunch of feeble reasons to vote no. Not a single "He rules as an X kind of judge, and that is wrong/right" ... the Dems cant admit it that way, because Roberts the Umpire is exactly the kind of judge

What do you mean nearly? Wellstone was predictably as far left as Dayton, but he at least had brains. Dayton is easily the dumbest member of the U.S. Senate with a penis. However, he isn't quite as dumb as either Patty Bin Murray, Barbara Boxer or Mary Landrieu, roughly in that order.
