Man Charged With Animal Cruelty After Tossing Kitten To Pit Bull

Nicholasville, KY (AP) -- A man was charged with first-degree cruelty to animals after allowing his pit bull to maul a kitten to death, police said.

Roger Alan Fairchild, 24, of Nicholasville is accused of taking the kitten named Midnight on Sept. 1 and pitching it to his pit bull named Damien, police said. Fairchild was charged shortly after he threatened to order the dog to attack two officers, police said.

The kitten belonged to Shanelle Crowe, 12, who lives in an apartment complex behind Fairchild's home.

Shanelle did not witness the incident, but apparently other youngsters did, police said.

The kitten often wandered up and down a sidewalk in front of the apartment complex. On the night of Sept. 1, several youngsters were petting the kitten when Fairchild walked up and grabbed it, said Nicholasville police Lt. John Branscum.

"A 12-year-old who had the cat in her lap asked 'What are you doing?' and he said, 'I'm feeding my dog,"' Branscum said. Fairchild then took the kitten inside his home. One girl followed in an attempt to retrieve the kitten and saw Fairchild throw it to the dog.

Fairchild initially was charged with disorderly conduct, resisting arrest, terroristic threatening and menacing, all misdemeanors, and lodged in the Jessamine County jail.

He wasn't charged with the felony animal-cruelty charge until this week, Branscum said, because it took several days to get a warrant signed.

Shanelle Crowe's father, Tom Crowe, said his daughter and 17-year-old stepdaughter "were pretty bad for a while" but have since acquired a kitten named Blackie.

How could someone do that to such a wonderful little creature? I mean, come on:

How COULD you let your dog maul a kitten like THIS?!

He's a jerk. Take the dog away from him and deny him the ownership of animals.

That would be too easy. Better to round up all the hungry pit bulls in the city and toss him into their midst.

Just fore discussion. Whats the difference in a kitten and a dog ,and a mouse and a pet snake? One can be just as cruel in his own mind by having a pet snake just for the joy of watching it eat a mouse. Yet its ok.
Where is the line drawn between the two and who has the right to draw that line?

Yes, but he could have avoided charges by tossing the pit bull to the kitten.

A snake eating a mouse would happen in nature.

While possible in theory, it is highly unlikely a pit bull would make a meal of a kitten without human intervention.

I think it's a difference between domesticated fun furry animals that you can cuddle with (dogs and cats) and snakes that you don't want to get your face too close too because they may take a chomp thinking you're food and not a master..

Mice are rodents... If a snake owner wishes to save mice, feed the snake puppy chow..

When snakes eat puppy chow or kibble and bits, then I'll think we can accept it as an equal to the traditional domesticated animals.

You are right about animal sterotypes but the snake has been a symbol of evil for a long time.. Tough to break into dog and cat status with that...

This guy is an idiot that shouldn't be allowed to own animals. Ever.

The kitten was a pet. The kitten was owned by somebody else. The kitten was seized from little kids playing with it. There are more too.

One need not view the kitten as something more than a mouse to see these differences. You are trying so hard to be intellectually unbiased and superior that you focus on one small truth, but miss the bigger picture.

Ok. But wouldn't a human make a meal of the kitten in certain situations. But thats not my point. I was going at this from a private property angle. Cruelty is one thing
and what you do with your own private property is another.
