Liquor Store Owner Cleared By Weld County District Attorney
An investigation of the shooting determined that the liquor store owner, Ron Trauernicht, 59, shot Wies because he thought Wies was going to shoot Norma Trauernicht, Ron's wife.
The robbery attempt began when police said that Wies entered the store and said he had a gun. He had something in his hand covered by cloth and used it to order store employees and two customers into a back cooler.
Police said that Wies was taking money from the cash register when Norma Trauernicht came out of the cooler and confronted him. Wies pushed her to the floor as Ron Trauernicht came out of the cooler and grabbed a .357-caliber revolver he kept in the store for protection.
Ron Trauernicht told Wies to put his weapon down, but told investigators that Wies pointed the simulated weapon at Norma Trauernicht's head. That's when her husband fired a single shot at Wies, striking him in the forehead. He died four days later.
Police found Wies was not armed with a weapon but with the water sprinkler covered with cloth to simulate a gun.
Weld County District Attorney Kenneth R. Buck determined that Ron Trauernicht acted within the law because he believed that he and his wife were in imminent danger of being killed and that he believed a crime was being committed when he fired the fatal shot.
An investigation revealed that Wies was suspected in at least four robberies in Greeley and Loveland. In all of the robberies, police said he covered his hand to make it appear he had a gun.

Bang! Your dead!
Gamble enough times and you'll lose.
Freakin' Sweet!
Wow. Common sense prevails!
Nice shot.
Allow me ......... "never bring a water sprinkler to a gun fight."
I love good self defense stories. I just wish they received more publicity.
BTW, was the sprinkler loaded?
I would have thought death would be instantaneous, to hours.
(Yes, I'm clueless. That's why I am asking...)
Holy cr@p, I am getting sick of headline editors' bad grammar! I honestly was trying to figure out how someone can kill a robber by shooting him with a water nozzle!
It's just like an idiot to bring a water nozzle to a gun fight.
Apparently his brain was not a vital organ.
Now, we can appreciate his Gun Control.
As of this weekend in FL, the perp would have died the instant he announced a robbery.
"Make my day" on steroids.
"Why did it take four days after a head shot from a .357 pistol?
I would have thought death would be instantaneous, to hours.
(Yes, I'm clueless. That's why I am asking...)"
It is actually a great question. I thought the same thing.
My only thought is that he must of had hard cheap target loads in the gun and it made a nice clean hole all the way through. Most of ust that carry .357 use lead hollow point defense rounds. They make a mess of things but don't over pennetrate as much and expand on contact.
He fired only ONE shot? When you're in a life or death situation -- don't take a chance -- empty the whole clip.
It was a revolver.
If there was not a lot of bleeding and it was a glancing blow and didn't damage the back part of the brain it can be possible. Add life support into the equasion. Humans and animals are not as fragile as some think. I have seen deer leave a mile blood trail only to stop bleeding and disappear. Then again a small .22 can mean instant death if placed in the right spot.
Since he was shooting a .357 I doubt he had a clip, think revolver.
