"Their Navy is rusting/sinking at their moorings; they don't have the technical/economic abilities to tap their enormous oil reserves, etc. etc.
We are supposed to believe that they can field an advanced (and expensive) missile system? Don't make me gag."
Well, of course Putin would lie in a heartbeat if it benefitted him, but the statement could be true.
Precisely because Russia no longer maintains a real military, they are probably putting more money into R & D, because they are the biggest arms sellers in the world. And they are doing as much spying now, both in the US & Britain (according to independent reports in both countries) as in the Cold War.

"President Vladimir Putin said Tuesday that Russia would deploy new hypersonic missile systems that would be virtually invulnerable to enemy defenses."
I sure am glad the Cold War is over, Russia no longer competes with us, and they are our friends now. Just as we start to perfect anti-missle weapons, they (supposedly) come up with this.

ah the good old days of the cold war--felling kind of nostalgic,,, too bad that the white race spent the 20th century eating its own, it has left us vulnerable to being overwhelmed by the savages of the third world. Do you really think we can afford to continue this way.

Yeah, that's why our (Russian) old rockets "Soyuz" fly to ISS without any problem and your "Shuttles" stand somewhere in the ass.
Ouch.. Touche.. ;)

Well Red6,
Respectfully 'junk' as you call it, will kill as good as 'not junk'. A T-72 used by a smart general is still a formidable weapon. Is it relevant that the soldier is at the wrong end of an AK47 or M16?
IMO sometimes our stuff is gold plated and kitchen sinked.
What say you?

Actually the biggest arms seller is... the USA. Russia is the second.

As the saying goes, close only counts in Horseshoes and Handgrenades...
This thread reminds me of when I was taking Russian. We listened to a song called Katyusha. IIRC it was about how wonderful the sound of the Katyusha rockets were. During the Soviet German conflict in WW 2.
Now I get what you meant!

Don't ask about the Japanese. It was a nightmare.

US standard missiles (main fleet air defense weapon) have successfully shot down ballistic missiles, which go ~20 times the speed of sound. It is marketing copy.

We are supposed to believe that they can field an advanced (and expensive) missile system? Don't make me gag. Don't underestimate their capabilities. Just ask any military survivor of the Third Reich.
