>>>I only glanced through the moveon related site but it seemed to me that they were trying to match people with houses/rooms with people in need. Is that inaccurate?

Then....let's say that is true too.

Red Cross has them in more than one place and on more than one site as the 'housing provider'.

WHO need the extra billion?

All the radio broadcasts I heard on our radio was to volunteer to open up our homes.

Most are encouraged to go stay with friends and family.

Who is sheltering and who needs the money.

john kerry:
"I will vote against the nomination of John Roberts to serve as Chief Justice of the United States.
I refuse to vote for a Supreme Court nominee who came before the Senate intent on demonstrating his ability to deftly deflect legitimate questions about his views, opinions and philosophy.

If he is confirmed – and he may well be – the Roberts Court will shape the course of constitutional law for decades to come. It will decide dozens of cases that will define the depth and breadth of freedom in America – our commitment to civil rights, our dedication to civil liberties, our devotion to privacy and a woman's right to choose.

With that much at stake, Judge Roberts needed to show us where his heart is. Instead he recited case law and said little about what he really thought.

While I recognize that other members of the Senate will legitimately make a different choice, I will vote “NO” on the Roberts nomination. "

1 billion $ is not priceless

It will go a long way in 2006 & 2008

MoveOn.org has 2 parts

a 501(c)3 - tax exempt

a 501(c)4 - non tax-exempt

I imagine they attempt to use fraudulent PR ads on tax exempt contributions like Sarah Brady has always done

I'm not very familiar with how the Red Cross works. I get the impression from their site though that there is a difference between shelters and short term housing. They say they have been asked by FEMA to extend their temporary housing assistance. When you clink on that link though you get "a page not found." RED CROSS TEMPORARY LODGING ASSISTANCE Here they are referring to hotels so I don't know if they are helping with those costs.

They then list a couple of other organizations. These include, along with the moveon related folks, a group called KatrinaHousing.org They have a Salvation Army link on their Housing Opportunities page where they include multiple links to organizations offering housing.

I conclude that this is a big mess that continues to stretch the means and capabilities of all those trying to help in any massive way. There are so many displaced people who will require semipermanent housing but who are now in a state of limbo.

Well .. I've thought of that .. but I'm not sure I want some idiot like Sheehan having control of so much repub money. The idea is good .. but there's always the chance of getting stuck with some ding-dong.

Bump.....

Amendment XIV - Section 3

No person shall be a Senator or Representative in Congress, or elector of President and Vice President, or hold any office, civil or military, under the United States, or under any state, who, having previously taken an oath, as a member of Congress, or as an officer of the United States, or as a member of any state legislature, or as an executive or judicial officer of any state, to support the Constitution of the United States, shall have engaged in insurrection or rebellion against the same, or given aid or comfort to the enemies thereof. But Congress may by a vote of two-thirds of each House, remove such disability.

I also checked my two senators, Hilliary and Chuckie, to see if their websites had a MoveOn link, and couldn't find one. It'd be interesting to see if any others do.

But this was known weeks ago. Fox News reported it several times right after the hurricane.

I was so glad to be contacted by a professional acquaintance that we know and trust about a private relief effort that took place immediately after the hurricane. Our acquaintance volunteered to coordinate the financial aspect and help put out the word.

Last night at dinner we learned that the effort has taken $26,000 in emergency relief supplies to rural MS areas, with a 96% effectiveness rate. (Only 4% went to admin costs) I'd like to see moveon, the Red Cross etc. try to claim they can come anywhere near that efficiency and honesty with other people's money, haaa!

Not one penny of my donation went to NO. It all went to rural MS folks.
