Some are calling former Marine captain Josh Rushing a modern-day Tokyo Rose for taking a job reporting for a new English-language channel of the Al-Jazeera network.

The Qatar-based network has been described by Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld as "perfectly willing to lie to the world.”

Somehow I doubt he'll be attending any Marine Corps League functions in the future...if he wants to remain breathing.

I will not condemn immediately, but this does not strike me as a particularly wise or moral decision, nor one that benefits the West.

While still with the Marines in 2003, Rushing was sent to a media operations center in Qatar set up by the U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) for the war in Iraq.

He was made liaison to Al-Jazeera, and established a relationship with some of the network’s journalists.

But he created a stir when he appeared in a movie by an Egyptian filmmaker, "Control Room,” about Al-Jazeera’s coverage of the war, and was seen by some as sympathetic to the Arab-language network.

The American Left adored this film.

"I know I should find some outrage, but..."

But can't you at least be outraged that he beat out Scot Ritter - after Ritter had already done so much for the enemy!

He would have been de-briefed when he no longer had a need to know. As long as he doesn't talk about anything classified, shouldn't be a problem...besides, he may be a plant.

More information here:

http://www.time.com/time/nation/article/0,8599,1110008,00.html

In the Time interview, he acknowledges that Al Jazera is a flawed news agency.

"Rushing says he looked into the accusations about Al Jazeera distorting the news, and found nothing to stop him from joining. "I'm not condoning everything they do but the Arab media is a key part of national security and how to deal with Arab world."

"Like it or not, "Al Jazeera is the most influential Arab voice outside of mosques. It is the largest shaper of ideology," says Rushing. And if American voices are not heard in that venue, then they have no chance of having virtually any influence."

and here:

http://www.ameinfo.com/68321.html (United Arab Emirates)

He gets to be used as a stooge for the Anti-American jihadists:

'In a time when American media has become so nationalised, I'm excited about joining an organisation that truly wants to be a source of global information," Josh said. "I witnessed during the war how the U.S. media was co-opted by the U.S. government's messaging. I am proud to be part of a news network that believes in the power of the un-spun truth."

"I don’t see how in good conscience he can work for Al-Jazeera,” Cliff Kincaid, editor of the conservative Accuracy in Media report, told USA Today. "It incites Arabs and Muslims to kill Americans.”

..then again, it's kinda nice getting pinged...

My opinion of this guy....

..If this story is true, and he's not a mole or double agent..(which I doubt)..

..then we need to let him stay there....forever.

...become a man without a country....only he's not on a ship....

..OK, a man without this country !

?????

Additionally, ????????

What a psychotic idiot. He's saying that the NYT and other MSM outlets including ABCCBSNBSCNN etc are all spewing government ideology and lies? Like Pentagon spokesthings or something? Is he on drugs?

I mean, they're lying all right. But that's a different story.

Media Bias ping.

He is willingly being used as a propaganda tool. He has acknowledged that he does not agree with AJ completely. That does not keep him from serving them.

I then offer up some links (elsewhere in the thread) that illustrate the different slants on this story from Time (US establishment media) and the UAE (which harbors anti-American terrorist sympathizers).

The UAE story was the oldest one on news.google.com. I find it interesting to see how the story is covered around the world. Especially in the Middle East since he believes it is important that his voice be heard there. He is clueless that he is being redacted. He is a useful idiot serving the cause of evil.

Should "Media Schadenfreude" pings only be used for Western journalists who work for Western news outlets?

The military wasn't happy when he appeared in the film Control Room. They were not happy when he was interviewed after the film came out.

What makes you believe that he has now changed his stripes to serve his government?

well, that's not for me to say... I'm only a former army officer. Closest i've been to being a Marine was when the old gunny spokesman for class of Marine e-6 through e-9's I taught told me "we all think the lieutenant should put in for a transfer to the Marine Corps, sir. We'll go to war with you any time."
