Owen is out Sep 30 2005 12:42 PM

By TimChapman

According to a very reliable source close to the White House vetting process for the next nominee, Priscilla Owen has withdrawn her name from the process.

With Owen out, conservatives have lost one of the better women on the short list.

No, not really.

But the big money is the Supreme Court - we all know that. And that is why the Dems, libs and RINOs are pushing for a "moderate" there.

My guess is we will all know by tonight - or tomorrow at the latest.

That's why I am hoping ... barring a miracle and him appointing Janice Brown ... that he picks Consuelo Callahan from California, who is on the Ninth Circuit. I don't know that she's a committed social conservative but I've seen nothing to indicate that she's a RINO. The thing is, she was confirmed to the Ninth Circuit by a 99-0 vote, with one not present (John F. Kerry). That will paint the Dems into the worst possible corner. How can they sell opposing and filibustering somebody who has already been confirmed, within the last two years, to a judgeship on the level right below the USSC, by a 99-0 vote?

I like the idea of raoul. I don't know much about him other than to say the idea of a cuban-american intrigues me. (and sticks a thumb in castro's eye!)

Yes I can blame "conservatives" for jumping to silly conclusions when there is no reason to. As you did in the post I responded to. While I believe the whole story to be a crock even if Owens withdrew that says NOTHING about another candidate and you were throwing in the towel when there was zero reason to.

Souter, Kennedy and O'Connor have nothing to do with this President. And Souter was a special case in any event which will NOT be repeated.

And I hope you are right, and I am wrong in my concerns.

Has there ever been a bigger fleece job in recorded history than the one Warren Rudman pulled on Bush pere with Souter?

I'm not familiar with Callahan.

The Dems will have have no trouble hypocritically voting against a judge for SCOTUS who they voted for a Court of Appeals. And the MSM will fly cover for them. SCOTUS is uniquely important, O'Connor was a unique swing vote, this would alter the makeup of the Court, we don't really pay any attention to what we're doing unless the cameras are on, blah, blah, blah.

Whoever gets the nod should require the judiciary to "limit their questions to strict constitutional ones"...after all, Judith Miller and Gov. Blanco went before the senate with their "requirements

LOL! The way to play the game in the post-Bork era is don't tell 'em any thing. Just give 'em platitudes. Roberts was a maestro at it!

Female and Hispanic. Interesting. How old is this judge?

I think the Bill Bennett comments have strengthened the Janice Rogers Brown option, but I think she's still a long-shot.

IMHO Owen does not have the intestinal fortitude to go through the fire again.

Here's the thing, ZULU. President Bush has appointed over 200 federal judges to their seats. There has been no conservative opposition to ANY of them.

He has a proven track record of nominating conservatives that is unblemished.

This is why you are taking heat for your statement.

Callahan is Hispanic, even though she's blonde and has an Irish married name. So that puts a Hispanic on the court which I think the president would like to do, and replaces a woman with a woman, which I don't mind. Not because of a quota or diversity issues, but IMHO there's something to be said for having a strong female presence on the other side of the spectrum from Ginsburg, who IMHO is the most left-wing justice currently on the court. Callahan is 54, is a former prosecutor, was a county judge, served on the California Court of Appeals and was appointed by President Bush to the Ninth Circuit in 2003. From what I've read, she appears to be very strong on law and order and criminal issues, which is not surprising based on her prosecutorial history. On the hot-button social issues like abortion, etc., who knows for sure, although she has been on the right side on some affirmative action cases. And I'm sure the Dems and media would find a way to hammer her and oppose her, never meant to insinuate otherwise ... the only thing out of the ordinary that I've heard about her is that she's a rather good tap dancer in her spare time, and at some legal gatherings she's lightened up things by taking her robe off to reveal a tap dancing outfit underneath and has demonstrated her talents for her colleagues, so she's got a sense of humor ... but a 99-0 confirmation to a court one level below the USSC would be a pretty big weapon for the White House to have in its arsenal.

If it is a moderate look for Dubya's approval ratings to go to the low 30's.

You're probably right. I run hot and cold. I'm angry about the apology. I'm angry about the sacking of Brown. I'm angry about the pass given Naggin and Blanko.

I'm far angrier about these things than anything the feds did or didn't do in the aftermath because frankly, I thought they managed to do a pretty damn good job and let the rats turn it into a debacle and throw it in their laps.

I agree..this is disinformation..if not pure BSa prospective nominee, and a good friend of the president's as well..would never issue a statement removing herself from the race, and the WH would never disqualify a prospective nominee in advance...they want to keep the media, and the Dems guessing. If true, this would allow Schumer to claim a "victory"..we scared them off..
