Iraqi Police Conduct Raid Without Oversight
American Forces Press Service ^ | Oct 1, 2005 | Spc. Ben Brody, USA

BAGHDAD, Oct. 1, 2005 – In the dead of night Sept. 24, Iraqi police with the 2nd Public Order Brigade conducted their first raid without oversight by coalition forces. The mission was directed against members of terrorist groups and criminal gangs in Medain, a district south of Baghdad. In all, the Iraqi police unit detained 20 suspects and confiscated several AK-47 assault rifles.

"Medain is a very important area for us to secure - many people suspected of terrorism live in that region," said Brig. Gen. Hamed Aabdullah Abrahim, 2nd POB commander. "Our brigade is conducting qualitative operations, not quantitative, and it has resulted in a safer Baghdad."

"This is the first joint mission, planned and led by the 2nd Public Order Brigade. The Iraqis are out front," said Army Maj. Rick Ackerman of the Special Police Transition Team. "There was no American intervention - 3rd Squadron, 7th Cavalry provided an outer cordon and the Special Police Transition Team provided a liaison between coalition forces and the Public Order Brigade."

The Special Police Transition Team is a Fort Drum, N.Y.-based unit that specializes in training and advising the special police in combat. They have worked extensively with the 2nd POB in Baghdad for the past six months.

"The Public Order Brigade will be instrumental in keeping Baghdad safe," said Army Maj. John Hinrichs, a Special Police Transition Team member from Gouverneur, N.Y. "They are critical to security in the city."

The POB is a paramilitary wing of the Iraqi police, designed to provide large-scale law enforcement operations in Baghdad in order to avoid using Iraqi Army troops in dense civilian populations. According to Ackerman, from Jamestown, N.D., the next step is to repeat this type of mission to establish a pattern of competence that will help the Special Police Transition Team assess the POB's readiness.

"The Public Order Brigade will continue doing what they demonstrated today - taking the lead in every aspect of the mission, while they further refine their planning," Ackerman said. "We're moving toward a point where the Public Order Brigade won't need us; Our job is put ourselves out of a job. As the Public Order Brigade stands up, we stand down."

"Conducting joint operations helps both U.S. and Iraqi units," said Army Lt. Col. Robert Kerecz, Special Police transition Team commander. "The more we understand and appreciate each other's capabilities, the more effective team we are."

"We will hunt terrorists wherever they dwell," Abrahim said after the mission. "We give the Iraqi people hope as we develop our army, and make it more advanced - so we may live in peace."

In related news, the Iraq Police Service graduated 669 police officers from the basic police-training course Sept. 29 at the Baghdad Police College.

The Baghdad Police Academy opened its doors in January 2004 and has graduated more than 15,800 students. This was the first basic training course taught entirely by Iraqi police trainers, who received basic and advanced instructor development training at the facility.

The 10-week basic police-training program is designed to provide fundamental and democratic policing skills based on international human rights standards to the students in preparation for assuming police officer responsibilities. The program consists of academic study of general policing topics combined with a heavy emphasis to tactical operational policing skills.

Also, The Iraqi Police Service graduated 223 police officers from advanced and specialty courses at the Adnan Training Facility Sept. 29 as part of the Iraqi government's ongoing effort to train its security forces.

The courses consist of basic criminal investigations with 41 graduates, advanced criminal investigations with 10 graduates, interview and interrogations with 27 graduates, violent crime investigation with 45 graduates, criminal intelligence with 23 graduates and election security with 77 graduates.

The basic criminal investigation course, designed to introduce participants to basic concepts of criminal investigation, covers topics such as theft, burglary, arson, robbery, sexual offenses and homicide investigation. Students receive classroom instruction and hands-on training in fingerprinting, photography, tool marks and plaster casting techniques. The course has graduated 2,627 police officers to date.

The advanced criminal investigation course provides participants with advanced investigative techniques to be used in a variety of situations, but particularly in investigations of homicide, kidnapping, terrorism and bombings. This course has graduated 116 students to date.

From a security standpoint this is a Good Thing. No coalition oversight means no pantyphobia. Terrorists caught in the act will be in for a world of hurt.

Thanks SR for post. Shame as more Iraqi units take the initiative and do fully independent operations in the next few months what will stick in many Americans minds is the last videos they saw of the senate update hearing where Casey, Rumsfeld, and Myers basically looked like they did not have answers to Iraqi troop strenghts etc.. As the Iraqi's kick ass the L/MSM will be doing extra duty on every reported suicide bomber ramming their vehicles full of tnt into some market or pile of kids, and scream about the Vietnam quagmire in Iraq.
Such is life on the planet earth.

Interesting also is the detail this time around in just what type training these police have received. Like in any major city in the US full of crime hopefully they will go easy on the human rights ball@hit and make sure an adequate supply of buckets of water and clubs, pipes, rubber hose is available.

"It takes time but it is on the right track."

I know, that is what I have been harping for a long time. But sometimes I just let my guard down a bit. I know the paths pretty much they will take as things continue to shape up, it is the American and world masses that don't get articles and analysis such as is offered here and just go by the standard rip rap the jerks put out, that continues to bug me.

Everyone understands the importance and the advantages of the Iraqis taking this on themselves. Iraqi is going to end up with the most advanced police force in the Arab world.

The thing is, it doesn't matter. Eventually, the Iraqis will bring their country under control and no matter what everyone thinks, President Bush is going to be president until January 20, 2009. That is more than enough time.

The media can only lie up to a given point and then the truth will overwhelm the lies. What do they do then?

And one can wager no MSM types will have the minerals to imbed with them. If a tree falls in the forest and no one sees or hears.... et al.

"The media can only lie up to a given point and then the truth will overwhelm the lies. What do they do then?"

You and I know pretty much what is going down and will happen over a period of time in Iraq. It is when we see Joey shithead Biden and other goons, pissing and moaning about how public opinion on the war is eroding, and the jerks try to pretend they are so concerned about how the war turns out and so what is the POTUS going to do about getting rid of the negatives, while the L/MSM just chuckle away and continue deceiving the American public. That is what bugs me. I realize there is not a damn thing we can do about this. The L/MSM got the nation locked in for a long time and they control their mental processes for the most part. But it just bugs me. So Gav.......once every few months I piss and moan for one or two posts, then get back in line and continue speaking what must be said.

Thanks for the pic. We continue to build them up. Trained them how to take care of them selves and protect their buddies sixes. Some of their commando and regular army have recently been known to call our guys their brothers. There is pride in their work. They are seeing possitive results daily. As most of us are accutely aware. We have managed to start building a Esprit de Corps. within their officer corps and enlist ranks. Now the new Iraqi Army know a bit about NCO duties, how to take care of the enlist men. The officers now see a totally different way as how to fight battles, and treat their men. They will be the first Americanized/Britishized Army in the ME. And most importantly, more of the Iraqi peoples regardless of ethnic/religious affiliations are seeing that their new army and police are going after the Ali Babba. They are becoming first responders not dependent fully on the coalition troops. Give them another year of this continued training and experience and their constantly growing size, and surely we shall be able to pull out perhaps a bit earlier then the one might currently imagine. Once the borders are effectively closed down, Ali Babba cannot escape nor come in, so how long can Z-mans goons hold out if they are constantly being searched out and pointed out by ever increasing numbers of Iraqi's. The HUMIT appears to daily become increasingly more reliable. More towns sheiks and mayors will be calling the HOTLINE numbers for Iraqi troops to come in and kill those still remaining Ali Babba and known Saddamist operators. Damn. GWB aught to make me his spokesman at press conferences. Of course I would only last one time, after I cold cocked some miserable reporter after I jumped off the stage in a wild fury! Semper Fi

LOL, I know how you feel. It is discouraging and it's hard to keep our spirits up when we're confronted with such obvious hatred and distortion from within our own country.

I'll make you a deal, I'll cover your back if you cover mine.

This advancement of the Bagdad Police Academy and it's successful training efforts is another victory for George W. Bush.

This success story must make the liberal bias media livid and envious.
