EXTREMELY COOL PHOTO! (A little break from the Miers biz)

Vapor Cone on the High-Speed Pass in September at the Cleveland National Airshow 2005. I can't find a photog credit.

The full-size pic is AWESOME!!

Apparently this effect happens when the sound barrier is broken with just the right atmospheric conditions.

Saw a low altitude B1 flyover at an airshow in the '90s.
Very, very impressive....and loud (afterburners were employed).

FWIW, this kind of vapor, condensation actually, is not an indicator of breaking the sound barrier, but does appear at high Mach numbers. For instance, you can find a pic of a B-2 with this cloud, and a B-2 has never been even trans-sonic to my knowledge, let alone super sonic.

This condensation cloud has a fancy moniker - named for the scientist(s) who uncovered its secrets, but their names escape me.

Bottom line, it is a WAY cool photo, and this guy probably continued to accelerate through the sound barrier for the air show.

Thanks for finding the pic.

I'll go google the name of the condensation cloud.

Not necessarily a sound-barrier effect. That vapor effect happens under various circumstances by a pocket of lowered air pressure around the aircraft, without crossing the sound barrier.

Vapor vortex caught on the presure wave generated on the trailing edge of the wing at high sub sonic speeds. I believe it will disappear above sound barrier.

I did the defensive testing for the B1 at Edwards from 1996-1998. It was an awesome plane. When it went over you at .95 mach at about 500 feet... wow.
Wish I had taken more pictures.

The B-1 is awesome. Have you seen the picture of the one making a high speed low pass over the lake?

That picture gave me the idea and I've been suggesting this for a couple years now. Since it's time for Ramadan again, I'll renew my suggestion for sending a message to our "friends" who believe in "the religion of peace".

Send a 4-ship formation of B-1 bombers just high enough to clear the minarets over the praying masses at Mecca at the height of the Haj. Have them push up to supersonic just before they go over that big black rock they worship.

As the dirt storm caused by the fly-by is clearing, have our ambassadors ask the leaders of the muslim countries if they got our message.
