Ann Coulter just took apart President Bush's SCOTUS nominee on the air during her appearance on the Mike Rosen show here in Denver on 850am KOA. She called for listeners to write their senators to oppose the nomination. Wish you could have heard it!

Ann said - "Totally unqualified", called Judge Roberts "a 'dream' candidate in light of this nomination", mentioned "cronyism" over and over. Much more that I'm trying to digest. I called the station to see if they saved the audio, but no luck on that. Mike Rosen was just about speechless as Ann went on and on about why this was a lousy choice.

I agree with Ann. Huge mistake and missed opportunity.

Ann's choice, Janice Rodgers-Brown. Not enough intestinal fortitude in the White House to go with that choice.

Can't wait for Ann's column on this nomination later this week.

Then why are Luttig, Owen and Rogers Brown still cooling their heels on the sidelines?

Bush is a poker player and he's playing his cards to maximum effect. He knows that he will likely get to replace Stevens, who's 85 years old, and has a better than even chance of replacing Ginsburg, who is still in ill health after being diagnosed with colon cancer in 1999. It's possible that he'll have to replace someone else as well.

Be of good cheer and think for the long term. I see Luttig and Brown being on the SCOTUS before the next presidential election.

You know, I have to agree with you on this one.

I am one of those others that you describe that has used that term today and I apologize for being such an ass.

I have posted more in the last few days than I have in years and I was getting a little frustrated at being called names and being attacked for what I believe are legitimate concerns.

Please except my heartfelt apologies.

No matter what we think about this choice we will not know anything for sure for a few years and after we see some decisions come down.

GOP base needs to tell their Senators its time to choose: It's Miers' job or their. Full revolt if Miers is confirmed.

It would be funny to see Miers confirmed by a lopsided Democrat-heavy vote, then go on to vote in lockstep with Thomas and Scalia, eventually overturning Roe.

As Mark Levin said on his show last night....he was involved in the vetting of Anthony Kennedy and Kennedy lied through his teeth about his judicial philosophy. Anyone can say anything. Why leave anything to chance? Why, when there were potential nominees with a strong record...should we now just hope and trust...why didn't he pick someone who had a record of originalism? Why? I just don't get it

All your Levin anecdote illustrates is no vetting is perfect. President Bush has worked with Miers for years and she has spearheaded that very process for his other nominees. This reminds me of the Cheney pick. The odds are much more in Bush's favor that Miers is as he represents.

BTW, I didn't realize Levin is living with the shame of not vetting Kennedy properly and blaming it on "lies". Not very impressive for Mark.

Sure, but how does an attempt to overthrow a communist regime 90 miles from the United States amount to treason? While a complete failure, it would seem to be the opposite of treason against our country.

Kennedy was also awarded a Navy and Marine Corps Medal for his heroics in the rescue of the crew of PT 109, and a Purple Heart.

Not exactly the resume of a traitor, and why I no longer take Coulter seriously.

The cronyism charge is an interesting one.

It seems to me that Bush is picking candidates who were savvy enough to keep their noses clean over the years. We're not in the process, and for better or worse have to trust the leadership to a certain extent. Perhaps there's "dirt" (as in double standard dirt -- wouldn't tank a liberal, but would send a conservative into a tailspin) on some of the other candidates?

Everytime a minority the libs like makes a first, first governor, first sports hero position, whatever, there are calls for global celebration. Any lib female with Miers' accomplishments (in private practive, in Bar leadership) would be hailed as a Betty Friedan/Margaret Mead or pick your feminaziwacko, as a "groundbreaker" a courageous, blah blah, blah.

Look at Michael Steele, First Black Liutenant (sp?) Governor of Maryland? You'd think the spot were vacant, and they illegaly got a copy of his credit report.

Here's Miers, with THIRTY YEARS of REAL legal experience, and it's like she's a freshly-minted law student. She's, like, a real American person, versus a Ivy-poisoned type, of which there are many.

Do you know how many liberals with her exact qualifications would be totally seen as hugely qualified, no whisper of qualification issues?

I'm starting to like this candidate more and more.

So that leaves "blind" trust in President Bush's judge of character and his pretty-good record of nominations in the lower courts versus the historic record of Pubbie SCOTUS nominations (going back through President Eisenhower) and the contradictory nature of the thin Miers public record. With Miers being Dingy Harry's "pick", I have to lean more toward the "like-for-like" label rather than the "more-conservative" one.

Bush is free to pick any man or woman off the street. One need not be a judge or lawyer to serve as a Justice.

Another issue that keeps coming up is the charge that Bush shouldn't engage in "cronyism", but owes this one or that one a "reward" for being a good judge, etc.

He OWES this position to a loyal judge who has shown integrity etc etc, but not to his loyal assistant-lawyer?

Some of the biggest proponents of this appear to be snobbish lawyers. I guess to their way of thinking, one hasn't achieved much until she reaches the rank of judge.

Ann is just concerned (as are many of us) with the constitution. She has not said anything untrue about Miers. In terms of Constitutional Law, Ann is an expert and this woman is a mediocrity. And, she was also temporarily insane when she was a major demonrat in the '80s.

Why take a chance with such an important pick? Why roll the dice? It seems when we pubbies do, the dice eventually come up "liberal judicial activist." The dems always get exactly what they want--why can't we?

I almost am afraid to think that Bush is savvy enough to pull something this cool off. See, on paper, Miers is INVISIBLE! She's got ABA, Bar Association, etc., creds, and these people, believe me, work in code all the time. If Harry Reid just saw her resume, stereotyped her as a Reno/Gorelick/type, abortion-lover, TOO BAD. Gotcha.
