Only 60 people worldwide died from it in the past two years and that is the justification? Or perhaps this is a rope-a-dope play to get Congress to declare that the NG is the governor's responsibility and they will be the ones to call them into service just like Gov. Blank-o did ... er, did not ... uh, oh ... I see.
If kept at the state level you could expect to see a Gov. deploy their troops at their state lines, the ACLU to file an emergency Commerce Clause appeal, and meanwhile the Prez will nationalize the troops. What a mess!
It is healthy to have the discussion but I am not comfortable giving blanket authority to the President. It's better to have a path available so a Governor can request Federal support, but it must come from the state and not be imposed by a President no matter how well intentioned.

What's the mortality rate of the bird flu? Is it as high as the mortality rate of AIDS?

When's the last time our President argued forcefully for freedom, liberty and diminished government tyranny right here in our own country, instead of (for instance) Iraq?

How can Bush be oblivious to the precedents he's setting? This is dangerous ground.

The military is already stretched too thin. Let's use Slick Willy's "Freedom Corps". That way if they catch the flu, all we lose is a few liberal activists.
I won't miss them.

I wouldn't worry about what the Gov. is going to do in an emergency........Worry wheather you and your family are prepared to defend, feed and shelter yourselves. When the Big One comes (what ever that might be), don't think anyone will help you.

Does this mean that, if there were a bird flu epidemic in Mexico, Bush would use the military to seal the border?

Should Bush name a "Bird Flu Czar", I wonder what qualifications the person would need. Heretofore, no one had imagined that a stint at the Arabian Horse Association qualified a person to head FEMA, or heading the Texas Lottery Commission qualified a person for the Supreme Court. How about Eriq La Salle for Bird Flu Czar? He played Dr Benton on "E.R." LaSalle portrayed an MD in over a hundred episodes over 8 years--more time than Brown spent at the AHA. Surely to Bush this is more than adequate qualification.

By the time this thing hits, if it hits, a quarantine will do no good. It is too easily transmitted.

If that flu ever did take hold here, or any deadly super contagious disease the first thing that needs to be done is shut down the airlines. Immediately.

"Bush wants right to use military if bird flu hits"
Gosh, did we hear the same press conference? Bush "suggested" that it be discussed with the Governors as a "possibility".

I say suspend the Constitution now. Obviously, in these perilous times, it is a necessity that those in power steer the ship of state to safer waters. Any who who question this wisdom are agitators, and should be locked up.
In fact, I am tempted to offer to have military folks quartered in my own home to make certain that I survive any potential catastrophe that my betters think is coming. I'll even offer to spit shine their boots.
Anyone who is a patriot should welcome this proposal with open arms, a smile on their face, and loudly proclaim, " We have the best of all worlds....."
P.S. In case you haven't noticed, this is sarcasm. i'm shaking my head at the bootlickers that plague this forum.
