Posted by Baja Cactus, owner of the Pemex station and motel in El Rosario. The Mexican government sets the price each month.
As you all may already know, the last of every month, Pemex changes the fuel prices...usually only a couple of cents.
So, here you go the prices for October 2005...
Magna............$ 6.12 pesos per liter
Premium..........$ 7.23 pesos per liter
Diesel.............$ 5.06 pesos per liter
These prices are in liters, and 1 gallon = 3.7854 liters.
Today (october 4th) 1 dollar = $ 10.70 pesos (+/-)
Using the previous information, this is what we have....
Magna............$ 2.165 dollars per gallon
Premium..........$ 2.557 dollars per gallon
Diesel.............$ 1.790 dollars per gallon
Drive safely....unless you are off road, of course...

What are getting ripped off! And this will be a major contribution to the loss of GOP control of the Senate and perhaps the house in September. The pooch has been screwed so hard it can't see straight.

Of course their gas is cheaper. They have oil reserves. They have oil refineries. They have lower taxes. They have no government regulations.
We have $3.00 a gallon gas, but at least we have a clean environment. You get what you pay for.

Then explain why their prices are stable and ours have risen 50-75% over the past two years?

Pemex IS the government.

No. Actually, I was just telling you the facts. Personally, I think the environment is clean enough.

PEMEX is now the sole supplyer of all commercial gasoline (petrol/diesel) stations in Mexico.

That is because they kill "environmentalists" down there.

The point is missed. Pemex has held the price of fuel constant for over two years while we are being gouged with a 50-75% increase over the same time.

It's 2.00 a gal in Cozumel right now. And they are on an ISLAND!

You don't say!
The same world market conditions exist for all. Are you saying that PEMEX is selling fuel for a loss?
To: off-roader
Are we getting ripped off? Maybe, maybe not. But using the price of gas in Mexico to determine the answer is the wrong way to go. If we want to look to foreign countries to determine if our gas prices constitute getting "ripped off", then let us look to England, where petrol hit nearly $10 a gallon! Looking at it that way, we are getting a deal!
And Mexico doesn't have the environmental regs and 40+ different blends that drive up the price.

"The point is missed. Pemex has held the price of fuel constant for over two years while we are being gouged with a 50-75% increase over the same time."
And the point should be re-emphasized, because it is correct.
Fact is that the cost of producing a barrell of oil or a gallon of gasoline has remained relatively constant over the last two years.
The spot and retail prices have not.
The oil companies have made record profits as a result, and now inflation is going to creep back into the picture.

PEMEX gasoline is unleaded.
Is our petrochem industry so inept that "blends" drive the price up 50-75%? Not all areas of the US are mandated to use so-called, "clean air blends" yet the gouging is uniforma cross the board.
To: off-roader
Your statement seems to imply that you believe if we went from our currnt 40+ different blends to 1 single blend it wouldn't have an effect on the price. I assure you it would. Hell, many states require different areas of the state to sell different blends, and then they have to do seasonal changes of the blends as well.
And you keep using the word "gouging". Can you define the word and then provide evidence that we are being "gouged"? And if you can, please forward your response to your states AG as your state likely has laws against gouging.

For instance (as of March 2005), Saudis were paying 91¢ per gallon, Kuwaitis 78¢ and Venezuelans only 12¢
Our gas prices could also be much lower, if we were allowed to drill offshore or in ANWR to produce our own.
The stinking enviro-whacknuts won't let us.

Also not entering this discussion so far is taxes. There are 4 federal taxes on gasoline, and then add in your state taxes and likely local taxes as well. And often, these taxes are a % of price, not a fixed amount per gallon. So as the price goes up, the tax increases with it compounding the increase.
I know here in NC the state tax adjusts every 6 months and come January 1 it is projected to go up an additional 5 cents a gallon for the next 6 months and if gas prices don't come down, then another 5 cents in 6 months.

Hey Willie,
Try putting some of that Venezuelan gas (I believe it is still leaded) in your car and see how you do the next time you have to have an inspection or try to get warranty work done on your car.

Yep, the consumers are being gouged BIG TIME. And the oil companies are laughing all the way to the bank.
