Miers' Brother Says He's Learning More

DALLAS (AP) - Harriet Miers is so private that three days after her nomination to the Supreme Court, even her brother says he is learning things about his younger sister.

Robert Miers, 62, said Wednesday that he has prodded his sister to tell him about her work with President Bush, but the most she will ever say is that she chopped wood with him at his Crawford ranch or jogged with him in Washington.

``She says everything is confidential,'' said Roberts Miers, who answered the door at his sister's 4,000-square-foot home in an upper-middle class neighborhood just north of downtown Dallas.

The four-bedroom, three-bathroom brick home and nearly one-acre plot, which includes a tennis court, was appraised for $687,860 this year, according to property records. The house, built in 1963, is now on the market.

Robert Miers said his sister bought the house nearly 20 years ago largely for their mother, Sally. Their father, Harris, suffered a stroke while Harriet Miers was in college and died in 1973.

He said their 91-year-old mother has brittle bones and dementia, and when her health took a turn for the worse this summer, she was placed in a nursing home.

Harriet Miers really has not lived at the home since she went to Washington in 2000, Robert Miers said. His sister visits Dallas frequently, and the siblings had helped care for their mother along with nurses.

He said his sister's quiet nature reminds him and his brothers - Dr. Jeb Stuart Miers of Dallas and Harris Miers Jr. of Houston - of their mother.

``There's a lot of people, including my brothers, that are not as surprised as you might think about the nomination because of the quality of her nature, the beauty of her spirit,'' Robert Miers said.

The family knew Harriet would do important things in her life, but ``we never thought it would be the Supreme Court,'' he said.

Miers described his sister as a private person, and with all the media scrutiny into her background, even he is learning details he didn't know, such as closely she advises the president.

But he believes she has nothing to hide.

``Everything is public record,'' he said.

I happen to think that modesty and discretion are admirable qualities.

Liberals, on the other hand, think that such things are hallmarks of conservative evil.

I'm sure he will soon be seeing the photos inside her, uh, lower digestive tract as she undergoes the usual public rectal exam afforded those who seek high offices.

"Brothers are such wonderful things!!!!!"

Agreed! I love my two older brothers. They don't know a whole lot about the person I am now, as they both moved out of the house and on to college when I was a teen, which is why I don't find this story to be too strange.

Looks like the media is going thru Miers' garbage to see if they can find anything useful to use against her.

How long before this turns into an attack on Bush?

Its Bush's fault. He kept her from knowing her brother.

They also thought that Souter was another Thomas. He turned out to be another Stevens.

I'll be as I can here,....... I am amazed and shocked at the tone of the threads on this nomination. I'm almost embarrassed at the DU style attacks on Miers, I can't attack her, I don't know enough about her to do so.

I hear Ann Coulter on O'Reilly a minute ago claiming Miers is not qualified, I'm a big fan Ann's, but she is wrong here. Miers is as every bit as qualified and Rhenquist was when he was nominated. Just as qualified as Thomas and 5 times more qualified as Breyer and Ginsburg. I understand that there is a body of Judges with more of a track record on the Court to pick from, I was hoping GWB would pick Janice Rogers Brown and I was sorta let down over his choice, but WTF.... it's his choice not mine.

I'll wait until the hearings and express an INFORMED opinion at that time, right now I'll take GWB's word for it, but something tells me he hasn't let us down, after 200+ judges nominated and passed, I doubt anyone can claim GWB has a track record of nominating Liberal Judges

I think that a lot of conservatives are just following the conservative commentators blindly. If Coulter, Limbaugh, Kristol, and Will think she's a mistake, then so do they.

The main reason the commentators think she's a mistake, though, is that she is not on their list of candidates. They don't know her. Bush did not select someone from their list, and they are outraged.

Personally, I look at this from a more circumspect viewpoint. Bush is the President. Most of us voted for him. When we did so, we were placing our trust in him. We won't know whether he betrayed that trust until Miers writes a few opinions. Until then, there is really not much we can do about this other than to hope he did not let us down.

I do think though that this reaction by the elites might have a beneficial effect, though. I don't think that this is Bush's last appointment to the Court. I think he'll pick someone from the list next time, and that means that Gonzales and other "moderates" won't take that slot.

Call the White House! The President can introduce you to her. He has looked into her heart.

No, check the time stamps on the threads after the Miers nomination was leaked. You will see that we think quite well for ourselves, unlike some who would support the President if he nominated Barney the dog.

In Limbaugh's defense, Rush has not been nowhere near as nasty as the others, in fact he has been quite reasonable. I share Rush's concerns, cause the fact is.... we do not know much about Harriet Miers, But Rush isn't calling Bush a Dictator or a drunk in order to convey his worries about a basically unknown SCOTUS nominee.

President Bush has done lots of things I have disagreed with and I rarely shared them here because of my respect for this president, but in my humble opinion, he has been stellar in his Judicial nominations, and therefore, he has earned my trust when he says he has picked someone we will be proud of.

Maybe I will regret trusting him, but nothing has come to the surface that would have me worried so far, in fact.... The more I have learned about Harriet Miers, the more I think GWB has been misundersetimated again

I agree with you completely. Rush has only been somewhat critical. Where I disagree with Rush is this: He says that we could have won a battle with Luttig or Rogers-Brown. I don't really believe that. And his complaint that we're taking a chance on Miers is misplaced in that he ignores that the President is not taking a chance on Miers. He knows exactly who he's appointing. Either he's appointing a conservative, and he knows it, or he is appointing a moderate and knows it. So what it really comes down to is whether we trust Bush. A lot of the Freepers and conservative elites do not.

Personally, I do, but in any event, there is nothing to be gained by "acting up." He's the President, and he's made his decision.
