If she's confirmed, Harriet Miers could turn out to be the High Court's first justice in a long time to pack heat.
According to the Associated Press: "Miers once owned a .45-caliber revolver, a gift from a brother who was worried about her safety when she lived alone in Dallas."
Texas Supreme Court Judge Nathan Hecht, who has known the top attorney for 30 years, told the AP that Miers' gun was "huge."
"She wanted to be sure she stopped the guy," Hecht explained. The judge recalled one Sunday afternoon driving out to the country, setting up tin cans on a dirt road and trying to teach Miers how to shoot.
So how was Miers' aim? "Terrible," said Hecht. But he said she kept the gun for a long time.
While it's not clear whether Miers is still armed, she sounds like a committed defender of the right to keep and bear arms.
"The same liberties that ensure a free society make the innocent vulnerable to those who prevent rights and privileges and commit senseless and cruel acts," Miers wrote in Texas Lawyer when she was president of the state bar. "Those precious liberties include free speech, freedom to assemble ... access to public places, the right to bear arms and freedom from constant surveillance.
"We are not willing to sacrifice these rights because of the acts of maniacs," she concluded.

Sounds good to me.
Well I've never been to Dallas but I wouldn't want to live in DC without one, or a very big dog, baseball bat, anything legal and lethal.
well, that may make up for what she looks like.
Unfortunely all the nay sayers will pay absolutely no attention what so ever to this as it doesn't fit their agenda that she is not conservative. Notice they all go to the articles criticizing her but ignore the ones that provid insight into her thinking.
I admit that I am somewhat skeptical about Miers, but the more I read, the more comfortable I am becoming with her nomination.
I was disappointed but I am not the knee jerk reaction type. But like you the more I read the more I like this nomination.
I am liking her more and more.
This definitely goes in the positive column.

[it's not clear] [sounds like] Oh yeah those are ringing endorsements of her 2nd amendment stance. In no part of the article is anything attributed to Meirs judicial convictions, just that her brother gave her a big gun one time. Harriet could be God's gift to the judiciary, but why would Bush roll the dice and infuriate his base with this choice.
I hope she gets in.

Just once I'd like the "chicken little" bunch to shut up and watch the show.
/flame off.
Screw legal. I would rather be judged by 12 than carried by 6.
But how many of the democrats, liberal, or anti-2A would put it in print for a national audience and scrutiny by the left and MSM?
Maybe you could answer a question I have about guns and Texas. My husband is buying a pistol tomorrow (our first gun ever). My question is do I have to have a gun license if I want to learn to shoot it? He is buying it in his name. He works rotating shifts (nights included) and if I need to shoot an intruder will I be "licensed" to kill him or can I kill him and just be charged with "killing without a license"? or unlicensed to kill but what the hell he needed killing anyway...seriously though, we have a fifth wheel and camp quite a bit and figured the way the world is getting it might not be a bad idea to buy one. thank you.

These are her words. Transcript from a speech she gave to the TX state bar. I keep hearing that no one knows her opinions -here's one.
The fact that her brother bought her the handgun for protection, the fact that she didn't take the time or develop the discipline to become a good shot, and the fact that she got rid of the handgun does not bode well in my mind.
As far as our 2nd Amendment rights go, I would MUCH rather have Sandra Froman (NRA executive) on the court.
I get the sense that Miers would think so-called "assault weapons" are "icky", ugly black rifles, and that no one has a right to own them.
Nope.
...if I need to shoot an intruder will I be "licensed" to kill him or can I kill him and just be charged with "killing without a license"?
In Texas if the perp is in your house, he's fair game, after dark if he's on your property and up to no good(stealing, vandalizing, etc.) much the same applies.
