First Lady Laura Bush said Tuesday that some of the criticism of her husband's Supreme Court nominee, Harriet Miers, could be driven by sexism.
Asked by NBC "Today Show" host Matt Lauer if sexism was behind the attacks on Miers, Mrs. Bush said: "That's possible. I think that's possible."
"I think people are not looking at her accomplishments. They're not realizing that she was the first elected woman to be the head of the Texas Bar Association, for instance. And all the other things. She was the first woman managing partner of a major law firm. She was the first woman hired by her law firm."
Mrs. Bush said her persoanl interaction with Miers left her very impressed.
"I know Harriet well." she told NBC. "I know how accomplished she is. I know how many times she has broken the glass ceiling. She's a role model for young women around our country. Not only that - she's very deliberate and thoughtful and will bring dignity to wherever she goes - and certainly to the Supreme Court.
I find insult in her(Miers) accomplishements?
Puhleeze...do not insinuate that I find insult in her accomplishments when I do not.
What is insulting is for Laura Bush to engage in what could be described as typical liberal rhetoric.
I didnt need to insinuate, your post speaks for itself.
Yes she said it was possible and it is. I've seen plenty of that and much worse right here on FR in the last week. Shameless freepers acting like the looney left.
Hey, she could have answered Lauer's question with a simple, "Of course not....these are the same people who prefer Janice Brown, Edith Clemens, or Priscilla Owens. Instead, she provided a loaded "It is possible....." answer that further allows the left to label conservatives as women-hating MCPs.
The "It is possible" answer is a standard routine for politicians (or their spouses) to make their insulting suggestions AND maintain an air of deniability. BTW, there is nothing libelous about the comments.....you Bush worshippers use any trick you can to tarnish conservatives on this forum who do not agree with you/him.
My post, though, does not speak what you claim it does, liar.
Too bad Meiers isn't Black so the Bush's could play the race card too.
It was a trick question. Laura Bush was probably caught off guard by it. Her response was fairly innocuous, "I think that's possible," but it leaves the door open for the left to bash conservatives as sexists, quoting the President's wife as their authority, and then for the right to get angry at Laura Bush for saying such a thing.
It's true that the White House and press secretary have been extremely stupid with their charges that ALL their critics are elitists and sexists and extremists and what not. Far from it. Most of the critics are respected members of the conservative movement, with the few obvious exceptions that can be discounted.
Various accounts have said that Laura Bush played an important part in convincing her husband that Miers would be a fine nominee, which exacerbates the case. Still, Bush is responsible for making this stupid decision, not Laura.
It is probable that sexism is behind some of the SUPPORT for Miers. In fact, before the Roberts nomination, the most prominent person advocating a specific gender for the SC appointment was...Laura Bush! What hypocrisy!
It sure does, as much as your insinuation that Laura is a liberal radical feminist. Nice insult, haha calling me a liar when all I am doing is pointing out your post. Maybe perhaps you be what you claim I to be? Nah, I am not so low.
BTW, you may want to consider laying off of the White House kool-aid for awhile. The effects of it are beginning to show in your posts.
No I dont drink there Kool-aid, nice ad-hominem though, you are so GREAT. BTW I am against her nomination, as I pointed out in my thread titled fracturedrepublic(vanity). So yeah I am a kool-aid drinker, bwahahahaha, know of what you speak before you open your mouth and let the world know what you trully are.
Uh, she said a lot more than, "I think that's possible".
She also said:
By the time she is confirmed you'll realize how rediculous your faithless spectacle has been and I'll be cooking up a nice Texas barbeque of crow for you guys.
Hey doo doo-zoo,
Thank you for the compliment. I am an admirer of Einstein.
Are you listening to Rush? Erase the question because you are obviously not.
ANd there is something wrong with pointing out her accomplishments?
Such subtleties are sometimes lost on FReepers, and even Rush. :^)
Now you've done it. You get to eat your crow raw. No Texas barbeque for you.
You are right. She did say a lot more. I was trying to be kind to Laura because like most Freepers I like her, and find her a refreshing change from the last First Lady.
I still think she was mousetrapped. First Ladies have to be careful what they say, but they are not politicians. It's only natural for a woman to speak up for women and for Laura to speak up for a friend. Evidently it didn't occur to her that her words would be twisted and used to try to insult and split conservatives. Maybe we should fault the White House advisers who have stupidly said the same thing and failed to warn Laura not to fall into this trap.
Hillary was a political operator and a manipulator. Laura is not. She's entitled to her private views, but she's also entitled to better advice from her White House handlers, who never should have let her go down this road in a TV interview.
Whoever is "advising" the WH on how to respond to the criticisms it's receiving regarding this nomination has bought into pandering political correctness and needs to be replaced.
