Five-year-old Evelyn Miller of rural Floyd was found dead in July.
The grandfather of the northern Iowa girl who went missing this July and was found days later, murdered, is outraged by comments Governor Tom Vilsack made yesterday (Monday) about the case. This summer, Vilsack reviewed five-years-worth of files kept by Department of Human Services social workers who investigated complaints about the child's welfare. On Monday, Vilsack said the complaints came from family members who had "an ax to grind" and whose "credibility" was "a bit suspect."
Richard Christie, Evelyn Miller's grandfather, contacted Radio Iowa to rebut Vilsack's comments. "I wanted everyone to know that our family certainly didn't have an ax to grind nor should our credibility have been suspect," Christie says. "Any of those reports that we filed were done with the full knowledge and sincere belief that Evelyn was indeed in danger in the household in which she was being raised."
Christie says his family feels let down by the state social workers who investigated their complaints that came from Christie's son and his wife. Christie says there "wasn't any real hatred or animosity" between his son and Noel Miller, Evelyn's mother. "But there certainly was a danger in the home and that's what Andy and Lindsey were concerned about," he says.
Christie hopes the D-H-S makes some changes as a result of Evelyn's case, but until those changes are made, he warns that parents may take matters into their own hands. "Everybody should be on notice that parental kidnappings probably will increase as a result of D.H.S.'s inaction in other cases similar to Evelyn's," Christie says. Christie has a blog on the Internet about the case at evelynmillermemories.blogspot.com.

In Jesus Name.
I am so very sorry for your loss. Just know that sweet little one will be there waiting for you when God decides it's your time. You are in my prayers.
Vilsack catering to his liberal base, as always. Very disheartening and frustrating.
Obviously they were right in fearing for her safety.

So many what ifs....
I feel so sorry for you and your family. You have suffered a horrible loss, and the monsters haven't been caught and punished yet.
May God bless you and keep you in these dark hours.
God bless you and your family.
Richard, as a fellow Iowan and mother, I have been heartbroken by Evey's murder and pray that each new morning there will be news of Justice on the way.
May God Bless you and your family.
This governor will never admit he was wrong. Your family was "a bit suspect"?!?!?!?! YOU WERE RIGHT. Everyone knows that now! Casey and Noel WERE avid pot smokers, not doubt about that. But he could never admit that DHS screwed up on his watch. My heart goes out to you.
It's unfortunate that the governor is now so entrenched in protecting the DHS that he can no longer see what is plainly in front of him, and in order to uphold his erroneous stand, has resorted to attacking the very family that tried to save Evey from the start. Surely he must believe his constituents to be ignorant to believe such rhetoric.
i am outraged and very frustrated the govenor said this.. over half the reports were made by neighbors and teachers..when the details of this case come to light, believe me NO ONE IN THEIR RIGHT MIND WOULD LEAVE A BABY IN THOSE CIRCUMSTANCES but unfortunately, that was not the case..are these dhs workers idiots or completely incompetent? i'd say both..just wait, you'll get what's coming to you for that!!!i am sickened and completely disillusioned by our state human services program...and the GOVERNOR...
Stay tuned for more updates as they happen.
(I'm Evelyn's Grandfather)
The Only thing that I would like to know is, "If the children were not at risk, then why are noel's other two children in a foster home now??? Are they in danger now that noel would be more protective of her children??
Just...damn!
