NEW STONES ALBUM A BOMB? ("Sweet NeoCon" not attracting record buyers)
Federal Review ^ | 10/14/05

Posted on 10/14/2005 7:25:26 AM PDT by Behind Liberal Lines

Fox News is reporting that the latest album by the Rolling Stones, "A Bigger Bang," is "less than a month old, [and] already out of the Top 50."

"A Bigger Bang" is the album that features "Sweet Neo-Con," a rare poltical song from the band, and one that attacks President Bush and Condoleezza Rice as "full of sh-t."

Fox also reports that the latest album by frequent Bush critic Barbra Streisand, "Guilty Pleasures," "has caused little excitement even among her rabid fans."

Both the Stones and Streisand are acts that appeal to the adult segment of the music buying public. Approximately half that public votes Republican. Maybe, therefore, the lesson is to not attack the politics of approximately half your potential audience.

It's been all down hill since Some Girls (1978).

....and the peak was actually Exile on Main St. (1972).

The Stones have been a parody of themselves for around a quarter century.

This is no surprise, even liberal propaganda songs aimed at teens don't comman a major appeal (a higher one than for adults certainly but nothing stller)

We get enough "neo-con" bashing from the media. Who wants to hear it in a song? Duh.

Things you never want to hear:

A nostalgia band at their concert saying, "And now here's something from our new album."

Mick (the economics major) should have given Bruce Springsteen a call to ask what shooting off his mouth did for sales.

Exactly ...I saw them on TV playing live in Japan back in 1991 and said the same thing to my Japanese girlfriend in our Nikko hotel room , " They look like they're doing a parody of themselves . "

I think the more likely scenario is that the fad of 50 year old's proving to each other that they are still hip by going to a concert put on by 60 year olds (where I might add a band of 5 musicians whose songs aren't complicated somehow needs a backup band of another 10 musicians) has come to an end.

I guess the combination of wrinkles, age and wearing spandex while trying to be a rocker just isn't cool anymore.....They have to increase the amount of handicap parking spaces at their concerts because all their fans really do need to park close (sarcasm)

Even the critics, who for the most part share Jagger's politics, say that the new album is their best in years except for Sweet Neo-Con, which is embarrassing and unlistenable.

Just a stupid move - no one thinks of them as a political act and there's no better way to date yourself than to release a "current events" song.

I am a huge Stones fan (seen them I think 5 times over the years), but I vowed not buy the new album owing to the stupid Neo Con song.

When I read about it before its release date, I thought, "This is Jagger making a calculated move to cash in on the (barely)noticable anti-war movement that I think will back fire." And it did. Now the Stones are my list with Sheryl Crow, Green Day, about 10,000 actors, etc.

A real shame since I've still got room on my iPod.

Why is it that young lady Linsey Lohan (sp) gets this, but thes decrepit old baby boomer losers don't? YOU ARE ENTERTAINERS.... THAT IS ALL. I know you've been fawned over your entire lives by left over hippies.... but at the end of the day you step and fetch for your dollars. You are not that important in the grand scheme of life... and your political oppinions are even less so.

I thought Mick Jagger's solo album Goddess in the Doorway was very good.

The cuts, Joy, and Hideaway are excellent.

As far as them being called a parody of themselves, why are their concerts sold out in minutes?

Compared to today's music, the Rolling Stones still are the best!

The Rolling Stones have about as much appeal to today's teenagers as Rudy Vallee or Al Jolson had to Baby Boomers in the 1960s. A double generation gap is very hard to overcome.

I guess old age begins affecting the brain somewhat. Mick Jagger and the Rolling Stones have their place in history. They are an institution. Anyone who went through the sixties (50 or above :), has to recognize their quality and uniqueness. But I guess they pissed a lot of people off this time around. I did not even know they were still in the states.

MICK, JUST LEAVE POLITICS ALONE, and everything will fine :)

Hopefully the liberal entertainers and MSM never learn this lesson:

Both the Stones and Streisand are acts that appeal to the adult segment of the music buying public. Approximately half that public votes Republican. Maybe, therefore, the lesson is to not attack the politics of approximately half your potential audience.

Let them continue to attack GW, republicans, and Christians. That costs them about 50% of their potential market. That action leaves them with dummies, druggies, welfare queens and the pseudo elite of the liberals. That group isn't going to enable anyone or any corporation to be financially successful.

Neither John Lennon or Paul McCartney wrote anything that's been remotely listenable after the Beatles broke up.

The two of them combined were a great songwriter, apart they were each worse than Manilow.

I'm still surprised and saddened Mick went down this road. All those years he always did a great job of not allowing such cheap political bandwagon crap in the group, and the Stones were to be commended for it as they navigated some turbulent decades.

Mick, a shrewd businessman and London School of Economics alumnus, has even been eyed suspiciously as a closet Tory.

But this "NeoCon" crap is just lame. End it Mick, it's over.

They should have learned a lesson from the early 20th century Soviet composers who were then forced to write political agenda (commie supporting) operas, etc. Those works were stale and really uneagaing stories which were never as good nor well received as the the parallel music-inspired projects.

BaBra and the Stones set out to write and pigeon hole in to the albums some trash-Bush songs and whatever creativity they might have had left went well underground for these projects.
