Beheading is certainly an ancient and honored custom within Islam. I've read several articles on the history of beheading. A quick Google search turns up this one,

But there are several others that go into greater detail. As you can see in this one, however, the custom was first honored by Muhammed himself.

Yes, beheading is an ancient custom. Daniel Pearl was not classically beheaded with a swift sword, axe or guillotine. It was sawn off.
Barbarism pure and simple, a big difference.
