WHY ARE WE WINNING THE WAR ON CRIME?
The U.S. violent crime rate is at a 30-year low, and experts have many theories to explain it, especially the drop in the 1990s. Among them:
-The fastest-growing population segment is those over age 50, who commit few violent crimes.
-A record 2 million-plus people are locked up in prison.
-The crack market shrunk in the '90s.
-About 100,000 police officers were added since the mid-'90s.
-Improved tactics -- such as the "broken windows" theory of policing, which cracks down on petty crime -- have helped.
-The nationwide legalization of abortion in 1973 produced a generation with fewer unwanted children, and therefore fewer criminals.
-Terrorism may have deterred street crime.
Huh?
I thought it was even older than that. I could have sworn I heard crap like that in the 80's.
That was my reaction. Yeah, I don't think I'll go rob that old lady down the street because Al-Qaida may be lurking behind the bushes. LOL
A whole new generation of criminals is coming of age though.
I don't feel that safe. Seems like in my area there has been a rash lately of muggings, carjackings, robberies, assaults, burglaries. Often the perpetrators are "juveniles."
I don't know about other cities but the increased street presence of police in NYC is a definite crime deterrent.
In 1978, GA became a shall issue state and by the mid-90s, more than 30 US states allowed law-abiding citizens to carry concealed firearms.
So Bill Bennett is now vindicated?
Because more and more criminals are off the streets and behind bars and not able to prey on innocent victims.
Isn't there always a whole new generation of criminals coming of age?

Isn't that what Bill Bennett was basically saying? No matter what race that you plug into the equation....less people means less crime.
You mean some in the media finally figutred this out? Usually when they talk about declining crime rates, they follow it right up with, "But there's a record number of people in prison! How can the crime rate be lower?"
Spot on there, old boy!
Check out some of Margaret Sanger's justification for abortion.
No, he was saying that the ends don't justify the means, and for an example he said if you got rid of the black population throught abortion then the crime rate would be lower than it othewise would. (This is true because the crime rate is much higher in the black population. If you didn't have that population then the overall crime rate would obviously be lower.) He said that using this lower crime rate effect to justify getting rid of blacks (by abortion in his example) would be immoral and wrong.
