More Teens Wearing Pajamas To School
AP ^ | October 18, 2005 | Staff

There's a new fad of students -- mostly girls -- wearing pajama bottoms to school, and so far administrators are not making a fuss about it.

"Some days you don't want to get dressed up for school. Like when it's raining and cold. You just want to be cozy," said Ben Lomond High School junior Elvia Escalante, 16.

School administrators in Ogden, Weber and Davis school districts say the pajamas have been modest and there hasn't been a problem.

"There are worse things a kid could wear to school," said Ross Lunceford, principal of Hillcrest Elementary School in Ogden.

"There's a fine line there, and I think sometimes we need to pick our battles. Should we get into a tussle over pajamas?" said Eileen Nicholas, student and family services teacher specialist for Ogden district.

Some students don't think much of the attire.

"They may be comfy, but it makes you look trashy and it gives you the idea you can just slack off for the day," said Ben Lomond High School senior Alena Marshall, 18.

What a sanctimonious and prejudiced statement. No wonder our country is in such a mess considering the attitudes of some of those who came before me and my kids.

How do you know these kids do not have great parenting? My daughter, who I mentioned earlier is a wonderful kid. I'd like to think my parenting had something to do with that. But you and others would assume otherwise simply because of her dress.

What you just described, could be used to describe my wife, when she first walked into the church I was attending, before our marriage. She looked "immodest". Plenty of skin. Hey, the church is for sinners, right?

Today, years after conversion and our marriage, she'd never do that. But even for those Christians who still do that, I prefer to let them come in "immodest", than to not come in at all.

Exactly WHO is stereotyping here? YOU are the one who called these kids "the darling offspring of Generation Xers and Yers". Now just who is stereotyping?

I know the difference. You'll have to trust me on that.

Not pretentious

And very easy to relate to. A group of people not impressed with clothing, but simply children of God :)

Girls even wear curlers in their hair, and no makeup.

They had such a day when I went to HS during spirit week, pre-Homecoming. This one girl was gorgeous with makeup and looked like someone else completely without. Really made me think of "putting on her face."

I agree. As they mature they will learn better and do better. OTOH, maybe the ones, the males in particular, who have such a problem with these ladies need to check themselves and examine why they are looking in the first place. Seems to me there are still a lot of church folk more concerned with what others are wearing than they are listening to the pastor.

Myself, I would much rather be in a sanctuary with a couple of hundred ill dressed sinners coming to know the Lord and His saving grace than I would a bunch of well dressed busybodies.

That's a good point. You're really stuck. If you say something, YOU look like the bad guy. The girl wouldn't get blamed for dressing enticingly. Even if a general announcement were made about appropriate dress, it wouldn't get through to the ones who need it the most. The youth pastor and sponsers at our church have tried on Wed. nights by splitting up the youth group and having some frank discussions with the kids. Didn't work.

AMEN!!! Thank you for articulating it so well.

I too think too many people judge on clothing. The Bible would say that they're dressed in filthy rags, since their hearts are no less evil than those who dress "immodestly"

My kids wear pajamas to school but then again, they dress up to go to bed so I guess it all evens out in the wash.

I've heard that before. This is probably going to be taken wrong but it is a distraction even to women, even though NOT for the same reasons. Women KNOW that skin and that kind of dress attracts men and that's why they use it. I don't believe any woman that claims ignorance or innocence in this area. The idea that it's the men's fault because "that's where their mind is" is just a cop out to avoid responsibility for their actions. You can dress very nicely without being provacative and I think it looks a lot more classy.

you haven't seen girls wearing boys boxers as tho they were shorts? 2 minutes with a sewing machine to close the fly and they're done.

That's how a women's volleyball team my wife was on once provided the matching bottoms for their volleyball uniforms.

If a person wears flip flops to graduation, and to meet the President in the White House, wonder if any other event they'll ever attend will be important enough to wear shoes?

Not if they live south of the North Carolin/Virgina state line! I've seen barefoot women shopping for groceries in the local Piggly Wiggly there.

I always wore a tshirt and jeans, except for one day, on a bet, I wore my wrestling singlet all day long....that day really sucked too but the $204 I got out of it was nice....

when I was in middle school we had to wear ties and stuff when we were traveling and that wasn't so bad, but I don't even wear that to work :)

I wore a jacket and tie to my private school, got a college level education in high school which set me up for college quite well. I work three months out of the year and make well into six figures. You.............well, just keep on wearing your pajamas.

ROFL!!! I'm SURE your success is directly related to NOT wearing a pair of pajamas to high school! My goodness, wearing pj's would have turned you into a completely different person! What magical properties they have!

Barefooted isn't limited to south of the M-D line. Hawaii and Southern California have their share of barefoot women and men shopping in grocery stores.
