N.Y. Times Earnings Fall in Third Quarter
AP ^ | Oct 19 | SETH SUTEL

The New York Times Co. said Wednesday its earnings fell by more than half in the third quarter...

Net income of $23.1 million...in the July-September period, down from $48.3 million...in the comparable period a year ago.

The company also said it would take an additional total charge of $35 million to $45 million over the next three quarters, beginning in the fourth quarter, for another staff reduction program it announced last month that will eliminate 500 jobs...

Janet Robinson, chief executive of the Times, said in a statement it saw improved advertising growth in September, but the market in the third quarter had been "challenging."

In September, the Times said it would slash about 500 jobs over the following six to nine months. About half of the cuts will be at the New York Times media group, including 45 newsroom positions at the Times newspaper.

The Times' shares fell 21 cents to $27.54, below a 52-week low, in morning trading on the New York Stock Exchange. The shares have traded from $27.74 to $41.62 in the past year.

Couldn't they just "borrow" money from a local boys or girls club?

Shareholders can't be happy this, but I feel warm and fuzzy.

But they'll more than make up for it next quarter with the millions of people coughing up $50 to read Maureen Dowd's columns.

A couple of months ago I made a comment to a NYC freeper to the effect that the NYSlimes was increasingly irrelevant, was written only for New Yorkers, and was totally out of touch with reality in the rest of the country. He/she took great offense and gave me the usual New York City attitude, which summarizes to the effect that the yokels in the rest of the country couldn't possibly understand the subtile thought that goes through New Yorkers heads. In short the usual NYC stupidity coupled with the usual NYC pomposity and arrogance.

I wish I could remember his name so as to rub his nose in this.

She's been a whore for the Left for at least 40 years. What was she before that?

"I wish I could remember his name so as to rub his nose in this."

It's a laborious process but you have to click on "pings" and work your way back through a couple of months. I have had to do that to find someone who said something silly in the past when more information became available.

The NY Slimes had better worry about the market poll on the value of its worthless stock instead of creating polls on how bad GW's standings are.

If the New York Times prints 250,000 copies of its daily edition - and only 50,000 are read - and 200,000 copies are used for fishwrap, bird cage liner, etc., is it worth the trees dying to manufacture the newsprint?
