CALGARY (CP) - Former U.S. president Bill Clinton had a stern message for oil-rich Alberta about the effects of global warming when he ventured into the heart of Canada's energy industry Wednesday.
Energy-producing nations shouldn't keep their "heads in the sand" and allow the world's climate to change to the point where it could have catastrophic results, Clinton told 5,000 people gathered for a motivational seminar.
"In the long run, rich countries and emerging countries are going to have to be much more discriminating about what we use oil and coal for," Clinton said at the final stop in a three-city Canadian speaking tour.
Unlike the current U.S. administration, Clinton supports the Kyoto accord on climate change aimed at reducing the amount of carbon dioxide being thrust into the atmosphere.
He told the audience that the only way to make major change on any issue - from climate change to combating terrorism - is to work with other countries to create solutions.
"In the end, we can't solve any of these problems on our own," he said in a subtle nudge to Alberta, which opposes Kyoto. "None of us would join anything if we had to support everything in the group."
Clinton acknowledged the economic impact of his message in Alberta, which is enjoying a financial bonanza because of soaring prices for oil and gas.
"I like that Canada has a lot of oil reserves and I'd much rather buy it from you than anybody I can think of," he said. "I hope you go on and develop it."
But that must be done responsibly.
Clinton said it's wrong to continue to let the climate warm until "oceans rise to the point where whole Pacific nations are flooded, agricultural production patterns are disrupted around the world and tens of millions of food refugees are created, leading to a future we don't want to contemplate," he said.
Clinton's last visit to Calgary was for a charity dinner shortly after the 9/11 terrorist attacks which have transformed how North America looks at security. During that speech, the former U.S. president urged the affluent Western world to increase education and eliminate the poverty which can breed terrorists.
Four years later, much of Clinton's message remains largely the same.
"We have to create a world where we have more friends and fewer terrorists," he said, urging the audience members to get involved in charitable causes aimed at helping people around the world.
They can all move to Alberta when the big thaw and the tides rise...
Canada has a long standing policy of importing people to prop up the declining population, only as long as you're from some back water 3rd world country with a "special skill" like reed basket weaving or water buffalo breeding...
BARF>>>
Hey, Slick - what WAS the vote on that Senate resolution about Kyoto?
95-0, as I recall - against.
And didn't your buddy Tony Blair blindside you recently by declaring Kyoto to be basically DOA in Europe? That had to leave a mark, but, fortunately for you, your old buddies in the MSM buried the story, so not many folks know about it.
Liberalism really IS a mental disorder.
And PAYING to Listen to Liberalism is an even BIGGER mental disorder!!
"95-0, as I recall - against."
I thought it was 98-0?
LOL
Do people realize Clinton doesn't know what the hell he's talking about? You read his statements and they are just totally self impressed drivel. 'I really like that you have oil resereves and I would rather buy them from you than anybody I can think of but you need to be more careful how the oil is used' Just what the hell does that say???? A little kid could give that speech extemporaneously.
When is this tiresome old hippie going to shut his stupid mouth?
It's a given, when BJ Clinton opens his mouth his only motive is getting laid. Besides being a ChiCom agent, he's a total self-absorbed lothario.
I am thrilled that this arsehole is packing on the pounds with BigMacs again! I keep waiting to hear about his chest exploding... gives me a reason to open the morning paper.

And what the heck is that supposed to mean, "Cigar Boy"?
This guy is a legend in his own mind.
Idle words, Slick. Especially since you never lifted a finger to get the Kyoto Accords ratified in this country.
Luv it! That would be a keeper headline.
At the risk of seeming like a self-promoter, I'm posting a link to a letter I sent to the organization that sponsored Clinton's first visit to Calgary (in November 2001) after he left office:
Has Clinton been drilling in Canada?
Thats just typical clintonspeak. By using this language he is able to make many people believe he is all things to all people.
Calgary ping.
William Blythe is making me very very weary of his presence.
He needs to get back under that rock he slithered out from under. Oh, I forgot Hitlery is already there.
