st shy of Firefox's first birthday party, the Mozilla Foundation celebrated the 100 millionth download of its Web browser Wednesday.
Mozilla has seen steady adoption of its browser since its release last November. After a somewhat higher download rate immediately following its release, the browser has settled into between 200,000 and 300,000 downloads a day, said Asa Dotzler, the Mozilla liaison to the SpreadFirefox community.
"This is a great milestone. Our massive, worldwide community of grassroots marketers and users--not to mention the developers--have helped to put out a product that's really kicking butt," he said.
Firefox has enjoyed an enthusiastic user base the likes of which few companies in the tech industry experience. Thousands of volunteers help spread the word about the browser, participate in free support forums and discussion lists, and scour its code for flaws.
But the browser hasn't been without its problems. The number of reported security holes in Firefox continues to grow, and Symantec recently released a hotly contested report claiming that Mozilla browsers saw more reported vulnerabilities than Microsoft's Internet Explorer in the first half of 2005. In what could be construed as a shift in attitude toward the browser, its marketing Web site, SpreadFirefox.com, was brought down by hackers just last week.
However, the open nature of the Mozilla browsers allows the group to respond to new security threats quickly, and these developments haven't stunted adoption. If anything, Dotzler said, the company has seen a slight uptick in the past two months, which he attributed to new interest in other browsers and a renewed buzz surrounding the upcoming Firefox 1.5 release. If announcements of new security issues affected consumer adoption, it did so in both directions, Dotzler said.

Let's hope they teach you how to follow a link, since as of our last discussion you were having incredible difficulty clicking those I provided.
Pay no attention to our resident Mozilla hater.
I've been using Firefox since about version 0.5, back when it was still called Pheonix. I can't stand browsing on anything else now.
I also have taken an online speech course last spring, and this year, most of my quizzes and tests (and even my midterm) was taken online. And next semester, I'm taking 17 credits, and I am hoping to take some of them online.
I don't want to reopen that debate (because it is not germane to the thread), but you still cannot or will not admit that I busted you for posting false links.
But, all those links (that you claimed were "smoking guns") were gibberish. If they were truly of value to your argument, you could have easily posted the remark on the thread and used the URL as the citation. That would have made you look a little more intelligent, and a little more credible to the neutral folks on the thread.
Instead sir, you're exposing your true colors for all to see--a MS spokesman planted on tech threads.
I started last fall. A floormate referred me to it. When I'm forced to use Windows, I use nothing else. In fact, I have a portable FF on my 256 USB key. Though it's only 1.0.7, I'd personally like to have at least Deer Park, even better, one of the betas available to run.
Reopen the debate pal, show those links you couldn't open. You'd be better off getting off your dad's computer completely, though. And I mean that literally.
No wonder Semantic hates FF!
A free copy of Firefox!
Space bar sticking?
Hey guys, maybe some of you tech guys and or tech investors can help me.
I bought Redhat about 2yrs ago for about 5.00 and I made my mind up to let it ride for awhile based on some articles I read and some appreciation potential. I haven't paid any attention to the stock as I've been really busy lately and I considered it a speculative stock. Well, now it is at 23.00 and I'm getting ready to research why it went up, it if is sustainable or is it ready to be sold...
Can anybody give me a summary or anything on why it is appreciating so well and so fast...are the fundamentals good, ratios , or just a good area stock. I'm also curious to know if you would hold on and if so, for how long, or sell. (I plan to do my own research as soon as my night classes are over, football season is over (i coach)and the ten month old quits hitting my nine year old with hard objects. Any info or insight is apprecited...thanks.
Nice recommendation, provided you close Firefox down and restart it before testing for results!
Did it not say that in the thread discussion?
Yes, indeed - which is why I thought better of just rejecting the whole thing, and went back and made the changes again and tested again after restarting FF. Worked much better the second time.
I just downloaded 1.5 beta 2 15 minutes ago...
On the other hand, if he charged $5 dollars a download, me and millions of others would have never downloaded it!
I'm also getting my own computer. Plus, I've just helped a buddy recover his files. Letting the facts be candid, I'm only an amateur; computers is one of my hobbies. I don't plan on working in IT as a career, but I know that doing what I can to improve computing for myself and others pays off--regardless of trade.
Finally, I have to ask you politely to please quit with the subtle ad hominem attacks. They're clearly childish and immature, they're a proven debate-losing strategy, and everyone is getting tired of them.
