Four-Step Program; How Bush can get his mojo back [pull Miers, nominate Edith Jones]

BY DANIEL HENNINGER Friday, October 21, 2005 12:01 a.m.

The autumn of the Bush presidency has turned gray. Mr. Bush's approval rating is below 40 but factoring in the political wind chill it feels like 25.

First Katrina, a lady with no known politics, blew the Bush second-term agenda off its moorings. Karl Rove, Mr. Bush's Tonto, is about a quarter mile ahead of a postindictment lynch mob. And this week, the president's personal nomination of Harriet Miers to the Supreme Court was denounced on these pages by Robert Bork --which is like a conservative president's Supreme Court nominee being dissed by, well, Robert Bork. As my former colleague Suzi Garment was wont to say amid similar Washington meltdowns, "This is not good!"

After 22 months served, these troops deserve a major visit from their commander in chief.

Amen.

It's been hard to see in the muddy waters of the Bush presidency if he had his mojo working in the first place!

President Bush doesn't need his "mojo" back, the Republicans in the House and Senate need their "Cojones " back.

Jim, IMO he's really blown it with this Miers nomination. He could have really accomplished something by fighting for one of the others like Brown.

Compound this with the defense of the status quo by his "blue-ribbon" tax reform panel, and you see people who had seen SO MUCH to hope for from a Republican administration and congressional majority become so disappointed by it all.

Nothing wrong with Pres. Bush's mojo.

He's busy out doing the adult things while the children squabble in the sandpile.

Cojones or no cojones, he still didn't have to pick Miers.

Everyone wants to be the President. President Bush will do what he thinks is the right thing to do. And he didn't nominate Miers to then pull her.

That's for sure, but he did choose her.

To heck with Edith Jones, Janice Rogers Brown is a female John Roberts, a woman equal to all tasks on the SC - Brown would be the best choice.

How about, GET MIERS CONFIRMED, NAME STILL ANOTHER CONSERVATIVE to the next opening? And the next. And the next. I think Bush will get two more.

I like Edith Hallan Jones. She would have been my choice. But now I wonder if the JRB or the Luttig supporters would not have ripped her to threads too.

Anyway, I'm not President, I don't get to pick....I can cry and moan but it's never really helped in the past.

I can leave the Republicans, pull my support and teach that old rascal a lesson and live with Hillary as my President....Oh God, please NO!

I hope we can find a true conservative within the Pubs to launch his/her campaign soon, before the conservative movement self destructs.

I like Brown, but she is NOT my favorite for "war on terror" issues, and, in fact (I know it pains you to think this) Miers would be far better on WOT.

Nope. He nominated her becaue she is the "most qualified" of every judge and lawyer in this nation.

One could quibble about the prescription, but the diagnosis is sound. Bush's mojo needs a serious adjustment. The malady is not fatal, unless he continues to follow his present course.

Sorry but she has already admitted she would have to recuse herself in the Senate questionnaire.
