> Cojones or no cojones, he still didn't have to pick Miers.
True true true. But W has never changed a decision, or admitted a mistake, exc Katrina, which he didn't have to. I bet the President will stay the course on Miers.
In a perfect world, Edith Jones or Janice Rogers Brown would be on SCOTUS.
But this is Earth, and they would never be confirmed.
I know Janice Rogers Brown seems to be a FR favorite, but wouldn't she be 58 by the time she served?
Can we go a little younger? That's all I'm asking.
Estrada, McConnell, Luttig.........?
No. Even if Breyer or Ginsburg, et al. dies, the Dems will stuff and mount them a la Weekend at Bernie's to prevent this President from getting another pick. This is Bush's only other shot to remake the court. He has missed it.
Lets try this:
To heck with John Roberts, Edith Jones is every bit as smart and doesn't believe that substantive due process is the window to judicial activism.

Truly, the GWB legacy doesn't look too good at the moment. I'm sure the President and his advisers are familiar with the remedies given above as well as others, but I am curious why he has chosen this course.
Dubya's agenda looks ad hoc to me; not everything fits into one theme, as we have been hoping.
My biggest worry now is that commitment to the WOT will falter. Since the administration has not shown the will to fight on the domestic front, this does not augur well for maintaining determination on Bush's ambitious foreign policy. I am troubled by the administration's increasing censure of our longest time Middle East democratic ally, Israel. How does Israel fit into the vision of a democratic ME?
The hurricanes and the death of CJ William Rehnquist really loaded W's plate, and I prayed for him. I am having a hard time understanding his words and actions since then.
Elitist to the bitter end. As if only judges and lawyers can be appointed to the SCOTUS.
In any case, in the President's opinion, she is the most qualified candidate that can get the approved from our Left leaning Senate. Republican does not equal conservative.

Ever heard "If you think you can't, you're probably right." or "Try, try again."
"One of the true tests of leadership is the ability to recognize a problem before it becomes an emergency." Arnold Glasow
I do have to ask. Is there a pun in there somewhere (Mike Myers vs. Harriet Miers)?
It would add some spies to the story if there were:).
The "most qualified person in America" comment really stung me when he said it.
All the Liberals who tell me "Bush is a liar," well, I can't tell them to just "name one actual lie" anymore.
Rush Limbaugh had said that Bush "does not lie." I bet he's feeling the same as me right now.
I think the biggest tragedy of this whole nomination is just how much Bush is willing to sacrifice to reward his personal friend. He has tainted his honesty with that "most qualified" comment, and many people now question his honesty over the "Thomas and Scalia" thing. He has put loyal Senators who have been unwavering in their support of him, many of whom will be hurt either by voting for or against Miers, in an impossible position. He has insulted his supporters who are critical of the nomination, putting many GOP votes at risk in a very divided nation.
I mean, he is sacrificing a lot at the altar of Harriet Miers, whether you agree with the pick or not.
---"Not a chance for Estrada after the Miers flap over qualifications.
Plus Estrada didn't even have the stomach for the fight for an Appellate Court seat."---
Estrada would easily meet qualifications.
The reason he didn't have the stomach was because his wife was dying. She passed away soon after he withdrew. He was quite interested, but he is also an honorable, family man.
The interesting aspect of this article is that it makes the fundamental misassumption that all of the polls are true.
Our president does not , wohoooo!,configure his administrative policy around polls, like Bill Clinton did.
On all major policy matters he has chosen his path carefully and stayed on it with a degree of tenacity which indicates that his MOJO is just fine.
He will stick with Miers too. I do not agree with all of our presidents actions ,( he should have tapped Scalia as Chief Justice and brought Roberts on as an associate judge, he should start calling the "terrorists" what they really are, Islamofascists, and he should secure our borders), but I do not think his MOJO is suffering at all.
He just doesn't want to waste his time and energy with
political infighting, wants to secure the Hispanic vote, and wants to let the sleeping dog of American Islam lie.
However, it IS high noon at the OK coral. He better practise his quick draw.
No, he nominated her so the Judiciary Committee could then trash her and the full Senate could then dump her. What a pal.
---""One of the true tests of leadership is the ability to recognize a problem before it becomes an emergency." Arnold Glasow"---
Are you saying Bush is a bad leader because he didn't recognize the impending emergency with his base on the Miers nomination?
I think that it's almost impossible for the president to widthdraw Meirs at this time. Here's my theory:
I believe that a deal was made with the dems for the confirmation of Roberts without any hitch.
Recall that when Renquist died, that the plan was suddenly switched to have Roberts replace Renquist instead of O'connor?
Then Pres. Bush submitted a list of potential nominees to Reid?
He told the president that he would approve of Meirs, probably in exchange of Roberts sailing through the senate hearings and conformation. Knowing the weak-knee pubbies and the gang of 14 would filibuster any nominee in the Scalia or Thomas mold,(they have said as much) the president decided that he would go ahead with the deal. He didn't imagine the firestorm that would follow from some conservatives, so he didn't let them in on the deal. But I believe that some of them, including el Rushbo himself have figure this out but can not really address it. Just listen to Rush and you can tell that he has some inside info. I believe that the only way out for Pres. Bush is for Meirs to widthdraw, but it has to be a convincing withdrawl in order for the dems not think that they have not been double-cross.
Remember, this is EARTH.
