(RALEIGH) - A raid at a Durham semiconductor company has stirred up fears among illegal immigrants who fear they also may be arrested.
Last week, Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials arrested three dozen suspected illegal workers at Cree, which has a contract with the Defense Department.
Ann Robertson, an immigration lawyer who represents employers and who works with the Mexican Consulate in Raleigh, says people are terrified. The illegal immigrants who work for other private businesses are staying at home, and Robertson says she has never seen a similar situation during the 15 years she has practiced immigration law.
Tom O'Connell, the resident ICE agent in charge, says he received about 30 phone calls Monday from lawyers representing employers whose workers were absent, and from the consulate and its legal team.
US Citizenship and Immigration Services figures from 2000 show that more than 200,000 illegal immigrants lived in North Carolina.
Were they deported, or is this another "catch and release?"
Not in mexico.
At least they used the term "illegal" as opposed to the politically correct "undocumented workers"...
The open borders types keep insisting that we have to give the illegals a shamnesty because enforcement doesn't work. This pretty much puts the lie to that notion. Enforcement does work. We just have not done nearly enough of it. Illegal immigrants should be terrified; they are criminals!

lawyer,"hey what the hell?,our illegal workers aren't showing up!,do we have to pay sick time?"

It's about time.
Arrest the employer! The illegals won't be streaming across the border if they know beforehand that they won't be gettin' no yobs.

Here's a thought, better yet GO HOME!! Mexico needs you to help clean up after the hurricane.
And therein lies the problem, Attorneys representing the employers who hire ILLEGALS!!
This is exactly what we need to start doing. Shutdown a couple of offenders or force them to sell out to cover their legal bills and the jobs will dry up in a snap. Of course the politicos will never do this for fear of losing their meal tickets in the form of campaign contributions.AWB
Not to worry, your representatives in the US Senate will be coming to your rescue very soon.
I would very much like to see Ann in federal court defending these unscrupulous "private businesses" that employed illegal aliens. Following conviction, I would further like to see these cheap labor entities lose their government contracts permanently.
At what point, when an attorney knows that his client is committing an ongoing crime, does an attorney who continues to assist and represent the client in the commission of that crime, become complicit in the crime?
5,111,111 to go in California.........tick...tick....tick
Yeah, cut em each a check for 2000.00
GREAT question.
If there is an unemployment problem in North Carolina, I think I can solve it.
