Miers Withdraws Supreme Court Nomination

WASHINGTON - Harriet Miers withdrew her nomination to be a Supreme Court justice Thursday in the face of stiff opposition and mounting criticism about her qualifications.

Bush said he reluctantly accepted her decision to withdraw, after weeks of insisting that he did not want her to step down. He blamed her withdrawal on calls in the Senate for the release of internal White House documents that the administration has insisted were protected by executive privilege.

"It is clear that senators would not be satisfied until they gained access to internal documents concerning advice provided during her tenure at the White House — disclosures that would undermine a president's ability to receive candid counsel," Bush said. "Harriet Miers' decision demonstrates her deep respect for this essential aspect of the constitutional separation of powers — and confirms my deep respect and admiration for her."

You might want to look at this as something a little more important than who can one-up the other side. Unfortunately, "one-upping" seems to be what a lot of this was about from the beginning, and I can't believe anyone would take pride in how this played out.

Wonder if he has learned anything.

Well, based on his performance with so many domestic issues, most likely not. He had better get his head out of his personal agenda, and get focused ON THIS NATION AND ITS CRITICAL NEEDS!!!

Wellllll, Now the whiners got their way.. Bush tried to avoid the showdown between his own Republican party..

Be care what you ask for, you may get it... This could be the end of a Republican Senate.. If this doesn't cause a rupture on the right side that will set the table for the left wing Rhinos to jump ship, I don't know what will..

Can you say Hi to Majority leader Reid

Okay....So that means that the Dems have seen somone on the list that they would approve, right? But they've already said they would not approve others. Who's left?

I posted this FYI on 10/14/05:

75% Chance Miers Nomination is Withdrawn (John Fund says on John Batchelor Program)

I was listening to the John Batchelor Program on WABC Radio in New York last night.

He commented on the process that went into nominating Miers and added that the likelyhood of her nomination withdrawn has grown.

It has grown from 5% last week, to 30% end of last week, to 50% beginning of this week, to 75% last night.

Fund was on the program to comment on his op-ed piece:

How She Slipped Through Harriet Miers's nomination resulted from a failed vetting process.

Why are you so anxious for a fight? This sentiment is puzzling to me.

Yep, he's learned that conservatives will turn on him like a pack of dogs just as fast as liberals will.

I hope you're saying this as a good thing. He needed some comeuppance after this appointment. Bring on a real conservative and let's have a knock down drag out. He's already lost this, politically, so he may as well. There is no freer man than he who has nothing to lose.

Who assasinated her character?

Saying she wasn't at all qualified for the position is character assassination?

Not much difference between a 25% conservative and a 10%'er.

If Bush nominates someone clearly to the left of O'Connor out of spite, it at least is an honest clear message, and not a bamboozle, like Miers was. That would allow for a proper debate about the future of the party.

Let's hope he's learned his lesson about so-called stealth candidates. He needs to take a stand: with us or against us.

I don't take pride in how it played out either, but yes, I will get a kick out of all the people who have been claiming how unprincipled conservatives are whine about this.
