Ford To Monitor, Time Employees' Potty Breaks
AP ^ | 10/27/05 | Staff

Ford has a better idea: shorter bathroom breaks.

Managers of the motor company's truck plant in Wayne, Mich., said excessive breaks are slowing down production of SUVs. Ford said its contract with the United Autoworkers union allows 48 minutes of bathroom breaks per shift.

A memo this week warned workers are spending too much time in the restroom and said supervisors are going to be keeping close tabs on break time. The memo cites what it said are "risks associated with safety, quality, delivery, cost and morale."

A union spokesman said managers are being petty.

48 minutes in the bathroom??? That's a bit much. Figure in a 30 minute lunch (at least) and two 15 minute breaks (at least) and 48 minutes in the bathroom (hint: cut back on the bran) and I'd say the Ford workers don't have it too bad.

"A union spokesman said managers are being petty."

No, they're not. They are doing what the HAVE to do, based on what the workers do.
Workers will use bathroom breaks as an additional break, or a place to go to nurse their hangover, or just to hide out because their lazy.
When you don't behave as an adult, don't expect to be treated like one. It's a shame it comes to this.

Agreed. Cut their pay and benefits. That's not petty.

So in an 8 hour shift, they work a little better than 6 hours? Jeez! That's dynamite. What exactly is it that they're complaining about?
I don't spend more than 30 minutes a day in the bathroom, and that includes showering and shaving!!

Forty eight minutes??? Assuming that we're talking about an eight hour shift, that is absolutely ridiculous...unless, of course, the bathrooms are a ten minute walk (each way) from an employee's work station. And how likely is that?

hint: cut back on the bran

You got it wrong...Increase the bran, then it's a quick trip.

And it would probably make them move faster to the restroom, instead of meandering.

A sign of how absurd and hopeless the situation has become. It's not in the employee's interest to increase production because incentives have been replaced by "seniority". One only has to show up and demand their loot. Unions be damned.

Jeez louise. 48 min/shift?! With BS like this, no wonder their darn cars cost so much. Sheesh.

At first blush I thought this was a bit excessive on the part of management.

Then I noticed they have 48mins worked into the contract just for bathroom breaks.

Yeah, I'd time 'em with a stopwatch.

On this issue, I don't think the union has anything to go on.

The unions have been "going" on us (the consumers) for years.
48 minutes in the head, and $25/hr too?

I recommend that FORD schedule all future meetings in the restrooms instead....

Wow, that's a lot of breaking time during an 8 hour shift.

The union members are their own worse enemy. They get all these perks and then abuse them. No wonder Ford wants to time them. The non-union working person in the US is getting tired of defending these union jerks. We have some union people here that do work slowdowns during their normal 8 hour shifft so that they can get overtime. The company is getting tired of this stuff and will take their jobs elsewhere.

Deja vue! Back in Henry Sr.'s day, he had an army of
"turd checkers." They spent the day going through Ford mens' rooms, making guys on the toilet get up. If there was no turd in the bowl, you were fired.

Anyone that has had to deal with labor unions get a real education in how to "screw the man". It sort of resembles how the National Education Association operates. Keep all of those dunderhead teachers on school payrolls, watch the education of kids get flushed down the drain. That thinking operates in the same way many unions deal with other sectors of our economy. Protect the very people that are sinking various industries like the domestic auto companies.

I nailed it! AT my company I hear the complaint all of the time that "I should be getting a bigger raise. I've been here for X number of years."

Needless to say those making the complaints are the least productive employees. One particular complainer missed >30 days of sick time last year.
