An author friend (former network newsie) is taking an in-depth look at the recently defunct News Troika. It will be a great "insiders" book.
In less than a year, three of the most powerful men in America have left the public scene. Tom Brokaw has retired to the ranch, Peter Jennings is dead and Dan Rather is wiling away his days wrapped in self-pity, suspended in journalistic limbo. Rather is still employed by CBS, but he is regarded in the newsroom as a Dead Man Walking.
Much is known about ther foundations of two of these men. Brokaw was pretty much of a moral straight shooter and a decent reporter. Jennings could, especially in the early days, be a great writer/reporter but would jump anything with a skirt and a pulse. (He married his second wife in the delivery room.) He remained a letch until his fourth wife told him to cut it out or she would cut it off.
Despite all that is known about him. Rather is a bit of an enigma. So much is known about so many of his fiascos and tirades, but the cause is unknown. The Freudians among us see great voids in the understanding of his complicated psyche, especially his loathing of the military.
We know it is there. Were not sure why.
A clue to Rathers anti-military focus may lie with his own military experience. We know he entered Marine Corps boot camp in early 1954, only to washout and be discharged four months later. The dates are well known. The details are not.
According to Rathers statements, an old medical condition prevented him from graduating from being a Gyrene to a real Marine. But also, according to Rathers statements, Gore should be president, Selectric typewriters were invented years before they really were, and the Earth could be flat. So we really know very little about this significant part of Rather's life.
The burning question then, class, is: Why did Dan Rather washout of the Marines? Someone somewhere knows someone who was in boot camp (USMC Recruit Training) with Rather. Someone knows his DI. Someone knows his bunkies. Someone knows the story!
Was it an old injury? Was it the aftermath of an old illness? Was it that he just couldnt cut it? Was it the love that no man dares discuss?
What was it?
Someone knows. Someone was there. Someone saw.
Try to stay away from the predictable insults and attacks. This is not the post/thread to run down Rather.
This is the post to keep working it until someone gets the accurate data.
We decry the MSM and their inability to get a story right. How good are we at getting the facts?
Answers appreciated and they will be relayed to a responsible party.
I kinda like "Dead Dan Walking".
We can't ask and he can't tell.
Good project and I wish you luck.
Expert: Dan Rather Exaggerates Military Record
Wes Vernon, NewsMax.com
Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2002
One of the nations top military researchers is angry that CBS News anchorman Dan Rather continues to exaggerate and make misleading statements about his military record.
The researcher, B.G. Burkett, says that Rathers inaccaurate statements about his military service can be found in the new hit book "Bias, written by veteran CBS reporter Bernard Goldberg.
Burkett, co-author of the book "Stolen Valor, a history of the medias portrayal of the Vietnam conflict, says hes tired of Rathers double-talk and hypocrisy.
Case in point are Rathers claims in "Bias. Goldberg's book details a confrontation he had with Rather over the anchorman's compulsive liberal bias.
Goldberg recounts that when he told the network star in 1996 of his upcoming Wall Street Journal op-ed piece citing a specific CBS News report as an example of left-wing bias, Rather replied he was "getting viscerally angry about this.
"Angry I was expecting, Goldberg tell his readers. "What came next, I wasnt.
"Rathers voice started quivering, and he told me how in his young days, he had signed up with the Marines not once, but twice!
This is not the first time Rather has hid behind the flag and his own military service claims to deflect criticism of his reporting, Burkett said.
Burkett added that Rather is greatly exaggerating his record. First, Burkett says, Rather "misspoke when he claimed he signed up for the Marines twice. He didnt.
And Burkett is flabbergasted that Rather continues to proudly describe himself as a "Marine.
"What he did, he signed up for the military twice, not the Marines, Burkett said after thoroughly reviewing Rathers military records.
But Burkett notes that Rather "never got through Marine recruit training because he couldnt do the physical activity.
Rather 'Unfit'
As Burkett explains in "Stolen Valor," Rather "was discharged less than four months later on May 11, 1954 for being medically unfit. As a boy, Rather had suffered from rheumatic fever.
"This is like a guy who flunks out of Harvard running around saying he went to Harvard, Burkett said.
Burkett also believes that, far from being a gung-ho military enlistee, Rathers record shows he deftly avoiding entering the military during the Korean War.
Burkett says that Rather was a student at Sam Houston University at a time during the Korean War when "you could be drafted right out of college, with deferments available only short term, for a semester.
"The way he got around being eligible for the draft was he joined a reserve unit Army reserve but not the Marines. Rather stayed in the reserve for the entire war.
"The second the Korean War was over, and he wasnt in jeopardy anymore, he dropped out of the Army Reserve. He later graduated from college, and then went into the Marine Corps. So he signed up for the Marine Corps once, Burkett said, not twice.
Rather knows he is skirting the truth about his record, Burkett believes. "Hes made such a big deal out of this Im a Marine thing. I mean, to a real Marine, youre not a Marine I mean even though you swore an oath and youre technically on the payroll, youre not a real Marine until you get out of basic training. And he never got out of recruit training.
During Rathers angry confrontation with Goldberg, the author of "Bias says that "to his credit, the anchorman emphasized that his Marine service was during "peacetime so that "he was trying not to sound like some kind of war hero.
Still, Rather never disclosed that his Marine service never got him past basic training.
Meanwhile, Burkett is miffed that Rather led media criticism of former Vice President Dan Quayles military record during his White House campaign.
"This is the same national broadcaster who, night after night during the 1988 presidential campaign, hammered Republican presidential candidate Dan Quayle for avoiding Vietnam by joining the National Guard, he said.
"CBS was particularly heavy on Dan Quayle and his Guard experience.
Its exactly the same thing Dan Rather did during the Korean War.
"If I had been in Rathers position, added Burkett, "I wouldnt even have ever brought up the Marine Corps.
Burkett has tracked Rathers claims for years. In "Stolen Valor, Burkett investigated a CBS TV documentary, "The Wall Within, hosted by Rather.
The thrust of Rathers report was that hordes of Vietnam veterans were dysfunctional, mentally disturbed or harbored guilt because their superiors had forced them to kill Vietnamese civilians.
Burkett did his own investigation and found that this was all hype. And while he was at it, he looked up Rathers own military history. So determined was he that the story be put in perspective that Burkett ended up collaborating with ABC on a "counter documentary on that networks "20/20.
This attempt to set the record straight won "20/20 a Cine Award, a significant honor within the industry.
"We attacked Rathers documentary as being a bogus piece of work, Burkett recalled to NewsMax.
His capacity for capitulation knows no bounds.
He used another Marksmen's targets and tried to pass them off as his own.
When questioned, Rather replied the targets were fake but accurate.
The Corps has high standards. Blather was probably given the courtesy of resigning before they threw his worthless @$$ out.
...Why Did Dan Rather Washout Of The Marine Corps?...
Because he's a candy ass pansy and an America hating commie?
The Japanese, back in the days of lifetime employment, would signal an executive that it was time to resign by assigning him a small office without any duties.
Same deal here.
In STOLEN VALOR (p. 107) B.G. Burkett writes that Rather was discharged from the Marines after 4 months as being medically unfit. He had had rhematic fever "as a boy".
Let's start with Boot Camp. It is not 16 weeks long.
Don't they discharge gay soldiers?
Then please provide a link to that thread!
LOL!
2- Both ego and low self-esteem may contribute, in which case - one should feel ashamed.
But gee Saddam seemed so nice.
As one who is not a fan of Dan Blather, I have to say why does it matter why he washed out?
Blather didn't make it! for whatever reason.
Many guys don't make it through Marine Corps boot camp but at least he tried...
which is more than what can be said about the majority of folks...
then or now!
As any Marine can and will tell you; Marine Corps boot camp is very trying physically, mentally & emotionally...that's why when they refer to us they say "the few"...the operative word is "few." And we like it that way! LOL
Semper Fi,
Kelly
PS Now I did object to Blather allowing folks to "think" he was in the Marines...now that was WRONG!
