The Threat Matrix

The title refers to a daily report given to the president of the United States detailing the most serious terrorist threats against the country. To tackle those threats, the government has formed a top-notch task force to infiltrate the terror cells and cut off the danger.

"Every morning, the president receives a list of the top ten terrorist threats - this list is known as the threat matrix."

We here at FR are trying to be in conjunction with the daily reports around the world that involve threats. We try to provide a storehouse of information that takes hours of research.

Threat Matrix: U.S. Terrorism
What's become of bin Laden since he gave us all the slip?
Full Story

Some think he is dead, others that he is hiding because he is scared of being killed.

Whatever the reason for the strange disappearance of Osama bin Laden, not seen alive since his last mocking video statement a year ago, he is no longer the face of the global "jihad" against the West.

Abu Musab al-Zarqawi { TM 25,TM 27 }, the Jordanian responsible for some of the worst atrocities in Iraq, has become the hero of the hour on militant Islamist websites.

I believe they're already there, waiting for the first lockdown of the neighborhoods so they can claim that Islam is being targeted and call for wider action.

BINGO!

Consider a little game getter...... I carry a S&W 317 Snub .22 in an ankle rig in a Uncle Mikes holster that was modified by one of my parachute riggers to hold one of the small 50 round boxes of .22 ammo also. A local awning shop can sew one up for ya like mine easily.

The small lightweight revolvers give ya lots of value during a horatio at the bridge situation against superior numbers , not to gurantee a kill but will change the cowards minds with accurate fire......and the revolver vs semi-auto will use any brand of .22 ammo ya can find, shorts , longs, CB caps for bunny's er birds etc etc .

The .22 is my backup and carry 24/7 rig when around the house. The 1911A1 or my Glock 21 goes in the waistband when I leave the house.

Just some thoughts on what I like for my personal security....after watching Reginald Denny get an ass whuppin in the LA riots I considered the possibility of having to deter a large number of agressors that were intent on killing me that may or may not have firearms.... The little .22 revolvers were my choice as backup to my self defense handgun, now with the superlight airweight Model 317's available in 8 shot it makes for a viable tool to pack around.

Stay safe !

"British Terror Suspect Had U.S. Images
Updated: Saturday, Nov. 5, 2005 - 8:08 AM

By MARK SHERMAN
Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON (AP) -

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "Younis Tsouli, 22, was one of three men charged with a variety of terrorism offenses. One of the charges against Tsouli alleges that a video stored on the hard drive of a computer in his bedroom showed how to make a car bomb and another showed a number of places in Washington.

The charge sheet did not name the places. However, a U.S. law enforcement official who spoke on condition of anonymity Friday, said the Capitol was among the locations contained in short video clips.

Terrance Gainer, chief of the U.S. Capitol Police, discounted the idea of a serious threat to the Capitol.

"I don't believe there's any direct threat to the Capitol," he said. "I believe that's shared by the intelligence community."

FBI Assistant Director John Miller said the investigation was continuing. "There is no credible indication of any imminent threat at this time," Miller said.

A U.S. counterterrorism official who also spoke on condition of anonymity said investigators believe the men may have been involved in "jihadist bravado."

The law enforcement and counterterrorism officials asked not to be identified because the investigation is continuing."

"How they spotted terror suspects in Australia"
The Australian ^ | No.. 4, 2005 | Sally Neighbour

Posted on 11/03/2005 6:34:53 PM PST by IntelliQuark

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "IT was an observant lawyer going about his business in Collins Street, Melbourne, who noticed something that struck him as odd - a man filming the Australian Stock Exchange building with a small home video camera.

Not long afterwards, another Melburnian spotted someone filming a city train station and also reported it. Police found the same car had been used and when they traced its owner, alarm bells starting clanging.

The vehicle used on both occasions belonged to the father-in-law of a man high on the watch-list of ASIO and the Australian Federal Police. The suspect was a member of an extreme Islamist group based in Melbourne that was already under surveillance in an investigation code-named Operation Pandanus.

The stakeout had begun in August last year, after a tip-off from an insider connected to Melbourne's most radical Islamist prayer room, the Michael Street mosque in Brunswick.

The group was heard discussing terrorist attacks overseas, and investigators became convinced they were considering an attack in Australia. According to a well-placed source, "considering" is the operative word; the men had not discussed details or chosen a target, but were canvassing whether such an attack would be possible in Australia.

As the surveillance continued, one of the group was intercepted at an airport, about to leave Australia for Lebanon. In his luggage was a videotape containing the footage shot at the Stock Exchange and the train station.

Operation Pandanus continued for 10 months. But the authorities had no grounds on which to charge the handful of men under surveillance. They had not committed any criminal offence.

The men under surveillance were well-known to ASIO and the AFP as key players in a web of Islamic extremists in Australia.

They were followers of a Melbourne-based cleric, Nacer Benbrika, known for his extreme Islamist views."

Report: Dutch Police Foil Attack on El Al
Dutch police have apparently foiled a plot to shoot down an El Al airplane. (Hat tip: Uncle Sticky.)

Dutch television announced on Friday that Netherlands police arrested a youth who allegedly intended to shoot down an El Al airplane at Schipool Airport outside of Amsterdam.

Samir Azuz, 19, a Dutch citizen of Moroccan descent, was arrested with six other co-conspirators, Israel Radio reported.

According to the Netherlands intelligence service, the suspects enlisted the cooperation of two employees at an office near Schipool in order to perform reconnaissance. They also acquired weapons.

Reports revealed that Azuz, apparently expecting to die while bringing down the airplane, had prepared a videotape saying goodbye to his parents.

Approximately six months ago Azuz was acquitted on charges of attempting to vandalize a nuclear power plant in the Netherlands.

Iraq: jihadists dressed as women attack police station

Gender equality update: "Rebels Dressed as Women Attack Iraqi Police Station," from the New York Times, with thanks to Sr. Soph:

BAGHDAD, Iraq, Saturday, Nov. 5 - Insurgent attacks across central Iraq, including one in which the guerrillas disguised themselves as women, left at least 16 dead on Friday as Shiite Arabs across the country began celebrating the end of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.
In the deadliest assault, insurgents dressed in women's clothing attacked a police checkpoint in the town of Buhriz, 35 miles north of Baghdad, killing at least 6 police officers and wounding at least 10 others, American and Iraqi officials said. The guerrillas were armed with Kalashnikov rifles, rocket-propelled grenades and mortars, and pulled up in five cars, an Interior Ministry official said. The police officers killed at least two of the gunmen, he added.

Maj. Steven Warren, a spokesman for the Third Brigade of the Third Infantry Division, which is charged with controlling western Diyala Province, said the insurgents were disguised as women.

Travel Warning
United States Department of State
Bureau of Consular Affairs
Washington, DC 20520

This information is current as of today, Sat Nov 05 2005 14:05:12 GMT-0800.

LIBERIA

November 4, 2005

This Travel Warning updates and supersedes the Travel Warning of September 23, 2005 to include security information for the period immediately preceding a scheduled run-off election for President on November 8, through the installation of a new government in January 2006.

The Department of State continues to urge American citizens to consider carefully the risks of travel to Liberia. Notwithstanding the UN’s deployment of 15,000 peacekeepers and 1,100 police advisors nationwide, the overall security situation remains fragile and unpredictable. There was no major civil unrest during the elections held on October 11. However, political and social tensions remain high and could result in sporadic violence and instability as Liberia prepares for a run-off election between the two leading presidential candidates on November 8. Social tension and risk of spontaneous demonstrations or outbursts of violence could continue throughout the period immediately preceding the run-off election for President, scheduled for November 8, and up to and including the inauguration of a new President and the installation of a new government on January 16, 2006.

Americans in Liberia should also be aware of the possibility of civil disturbances and/or demonstrations by demobilized armed forces and civil servants who are increasingly disgruntled as a result of non-payment of salaries and other grievances. Owing to the potential for violence, U.S. citizens should avoid crowds, political rallies, street demonstrations, and any gathering of security forces. By most measures, Liberia is one of the poorest countries in the world and the nationwide unemployment rate is very high. Foreigners, including Americans, are high-profile targets for robbery.

U.S. citizens in Liberia should be aware of their surroundings at all times and use caution in traveling. Traveling alone or after dark is strongly discouraged. Poor road conditions, especially during the rainy season, and limited telecommunications limit the U.S. Embassy’s ability to assist U.S. citizens outside the Monrovia area. American employees at the U.S. Embassy continue to have a strict 1:00 a.m. curfew, are strongly encouraged to not go out alone, but to use the buddy system, and may travel outside Monrovia only under strict pre-approved conditions. Americans should report any threats or suspicious activity to the U.S. Embassy in Monrovia and monitor the local media for developments that may affect their safety and security.

Americans who remain in or travel to Liberia despite this Warning should register with the Embassy’s Consular Section through the State Department’s travel registration website, https://travelregistration.state.gov. By registering, American citizens make it easier for the Embassy to contact them in case of emergency and provide updated security information. Americans without Internet access may register directly with the Embassy, which is located at 111 United Nations Drive, Mamba Point, Monrovia, Liberia; tel. (231) 226-370; fax (231) 226-148. American citizen services are Monday - Thursday 3:00 to 5:00 and Friday 8:00 - 2:00 and 3:00 to 5:00.

For additional information, consult the Department of State’s Consular Information Sheet for Liberia, on the Internet at http://travel.state.gov. American citizens may obtain up-to-date information on security conditions in Liberia by calling 1-888-407-4747 toll free in the United States and Canada, or 1-202-501-4444 from all other countries.

PUBLIC ANNOUNCEMENT

U.S. DEPARTMENT OF STATE
Office of the Spokesman
This information is current as of today, Sat Nov 05 2005 14:07:00 GMT-0800.

ETHIOPIA

November 4, 2005

This Public Announcement is being issued to alert U.S. citizens to the potential for violence in association with widespread civil disturbance in many areas of Addis Ababa. The overall security situation in the city has recently deteriorated and the U.S. Embassy urges American citizens in Ethiopia to remain alert to the possibility of further spontaneous demonstrations, which could erupt into violence when Ethiopian security forces become involved. This Public Announcement will expire on December 31, 2005.

During the period from November 1-3, 2005, many separate clashes took place in the capital city of Addis Ababa between Ethiopian security forces and demonstrators protesting the results of both the May 15 elections and the detention of major political opposition leaders. On November 1 and 2, these clashes resulted in unconfirmed estimates of more than 30 deaths and more than one hundred injured. These events have disrupted normal communications and transportation systems, and public transportation in Addis Ababa is widely unavailable. The continued heavy presence of Ethiopian military and federal police strongly suggests that the risk of localized disorder persists.

The U.S. Embassy reminds American citizens that even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and escalate into violence. American citizens are therefore urged to avoid areas affected by demonstrations and political rallies, and to exercise caution in the vicinity of any demonstrations.

The U.S. Embassy in Addis Ababa will continue to monitor developments and, as appropriate, will provide periodic updates on the situation on its web site. Americans living or traveling in Ethiopia are strongly urged to register with the U.S. Embassy in Addis Ababa or through the State Department’s travel registration website, https://travelregistration.state.gov, and to obtain updated information on travel and security within Ethiopia. By registering, American citizens make it easier for the Embassy to contact them in case of emergency. The U.S. Embassy is located on Entoto Avenue in Addis Ababa; telephone (251-11) 124-2424; emergency after-hours telephone (251-11) 124-2400; fax (251-11)-124-2435; web site http://addisababa.usembassy.gov.

Updated information on travel and security for Ethiopia may be obtained from the Department of State at 1-888-407-4747 within the U.S. and Canada, or at 1-202-501-4444 from other countries. U.S. citizens should consult the Consular Information Sheet for Ethiopia, the Worldwide Caution Public Announcement, the East Africa Public Announcement, and the travel publication A Safe Trip Abroad, all of which are available on the State Department's Internet site at http://travel.state.gov.

Presidential Message: Eid Al-Fitr

I send warm greetings to American Muslims and Muslims around the world observing Eid al-Fitr, the Festival of Breaking the Fast.

Eid al-Fitr marks the end of Ramadan, a time of prayer, reflection, and fasting. It is the holiest month of the Muslim year. To celebrate this holiday, many Muslims gather in their homes and mosques to thank God for His blessings and His help in keeping the fast. Muslims also demonstrate their compassion by reaching out to the less fortunate and giving gifts of money or food to help those in need. This year, many American Muslims have reached out to the victims of Hurricanes Katrina, Rita, and Wilma and to those affected by the devastating earthquake in South Asia. Their contributions have been generous and reflect the important values shared by all Americans.

Our Nation is blessed to count many Muslims among our fellow citizens. As Americans, we share a commitment to family, a belief in God's justice and man's moral responsibility, and hope for a future of peace and tolerance.

Laura and I send our best wishes for a joyful celebration. Eid Mubarak.

And now for a Waukesha weather break: 50°

Thunder, lightning and raining this evening after an afternoon storm that left us with an inch of hail. Not the weather we should be getting. I'm not a native, but one would think we should be getting snow up here in Wisconsin this time of year instead of hail.

Follow-up story on Legionnaires' disease, an infectious strain of Legionella bacteria, in Rapid City South Dakota

"The announcement a week ago that an ornamental fountain in a Rapid City restaurant was the likely source of a five-month string of Legionnaires’ cases in the city came at a crucial point when the outbreak seemed to be accelerating, an environmental specialist said Friday."
---
"But the ornamental fountain, at a restaurant where women and men gather in equal numbers, seemed to offer no reason for the higher-than-normal percentage of women victims — except for one thing."
