I heard Pres. Carter yesterday noting how if he had a second term he "would have brought peace to the middle east."

This idiot caused all the problems we have today in that region.

I do believe your comment is a tad simplistic.

Have to look at this later. It requires RealAudio, and I won't install that on this work system.

But every time I am reminded of the Shah, I get this urge to break my thumbs around Jimmah's throat.

All the problems we are having with islamic terrorism we can lay at he feet of Jimmy Carter. If he had supported the Shah and if Iran was still "the most modern, western and advanced country of the Middle East" - like it was when the Shah was in power - we would not be in this war...

From Wikipedia:
In 1953 the Iran's constitutionally and democratically elected nationalist prime minister, Dr. Mohammed Mossadegh had nationalized the oil industry, much to the anger of the United States and Great Britain. This resulted in an embargo on Iranian oil exports, which only worsened the already fragile economy. To gain control over the Iranien oil industry the CIA funded and lead a coup to overthrow prime minister Mohammed Mossadegh (see Operation Ajax). The coup initially failed and Mohammad Reza had to flee Iran. After a brief exile in Italy the Shah was brought back again through, this time a succesful, second coup. Mossadegh was arrested, tried and put in house arrest. General Fazlollah Zahedi had been handpicked to succeed prime minister Mohammed Mossadegh.

Yes, we assisted in removing a Commie sympathizing Mossadegh and got a good ally in the Shah. Sounds good to me. Wish we could do something similar today.

The CIA put him in place. This is when the CIA was an agency in support of the United States as opposed to the CIA of today which is so full of Clintonistas that it is an enemy of the United States.

The CIA's analysis, based on SAVAK, was that the shiite Mullahs were no threat to the Peacock Throne. So Jimmuh leaned on the Shah, as he did to other 3rd world allies, to toe the line on "Human Rights".

The peanut farmer from Plains said that the biggest shock he got in his life was when the Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan.

But he really stuck it to them by pulling out of the Moscow Olympics.
