Media circus overwhelms Alito's mom

HAMILTON --The 90-year-old mother of Samuel A. Alito Jr., whom President Bush recently nominated to the U.S. Supreme Court, has become a celebrity in her own right.

Since Judge Alito’s Monday nomination to the nation’s highest court, flocks of reporters have descended on his childhood Fenwood Avenue home.

"I’m so proud of him,’’ Rose Alito told The Trentonian after the nomination. "Sam always worked so hard. Sam was such a good student. He was always ready to help me.’’

Fish and chips dinners, flowers and presents have been left at the Alito’s doorsteps from neighbors and close friends to congratulate the family on the news.

During a recent trip to a local pizzeria, a family friend said the shop’s owner even insisted that he walk around the counter to shake Rose Alito’s hand.

"She’s a celebrity now and she’s a little overwhelmed by it all," said the friend, who did not want to be identified. "The towns been really nice and she’s just a proud mother."

Despite her growing popularity within the township, the family friend, who answered her door yesterday, said Rose Alito wants to be left alone by the media.

According to the Drudge Report, sources said Alito has become a prisoner in her longtime home.

The family friend did confirm that Alito left the township for a day this week to escape from the media frenzy and constant flow of phone calls. He did not want to comment whether or not she was confined to her home.

In the past few days, the streets near Alito’s home have been clear of news vehicles and television crews. The family friend said they have noticed police squad cars driving by the home, but "not more than usual."

"As far as we know there haven’t been any problems reported," said a Hamilton police source.

For now the gloating mother just wants life to return to normal. Until then, she is surround by family, friends, neighbors and residents who support her.

"Sounds like Connie Chung all over again."

Excellent point! This is what the left media has reduced itself to. If they can't get what they want out of a conservative, they'll go after the family. I remember how they went after Mel Gibson's dad. Don't get me wrong, the guy does sound a little kooky, but then again I think if everyone objectively looked at their own families, they would quickly recall some relatives that are a little goofy. It's interesting, but I cannot recall any liberal politicians who have gone through the same treatment. Usually if a conservative pundit looks into someones past, they MAY mention a screwball relative only in passing, it does not become the main story itself. For example, even though we all detested Bill Clinton, as far as I know nobody in the media pestered or hounded his mother. I think I read a few disparaging comments on Free Republic and a few other website, but generally she was left alone. When I think of some of the liberal Hollywood actors and actresses that have made claims that they had a rough childhood (some of these are probably true), I notice how little interest has been shown by the media to look into it for themselves.

I'd give her a hundred bucks just to go out and say that her son was always a good boy. Why, when he was in college, he even took his girlfriend to the hospital so she could have her abortion, even though the two hadn't been intimate yet. And when his two pals on the football team wanted a symbolic union, he witnessed and brought the champagne. He'd hoped that one day they could join each other for real.
