An uproar was made and the desinger made vague comments about changing the name of the design but not its intent. Since that time, nothing has happened and it looks like they are proceeding. I thought it was time for more heat...and I believe that is exactly what it is going to take to avoid what I consider to be, no matter how well intentioned, this monstrocity.

GREAT! Thanks so much for that. We need many, many more people to do exactly that so that the growth is maintained. I am convinced if people were aware of this, most would sign and raise their voices against it.

Like that little train......I just keep on chugging along.....emailing the link and pinging Freepers.

I'll send it to the Quinn Show in Shanksville and ask him to give the Petition some publicity.

And I'll include what you said:

This must not occur...the very idea of each fall, around September 11th, during the fall of the year, for a red crescent to appear in the Pennsylvania countryside surrounding the Flight 93 crash site is an abomination to me and a very powerful (and for free people of the world, a very negative) symbolic representation that will encourage and embolden our enemies and shame us all.

Numbers continue to grow slowly...and I believe most of that is word of mouth through email.

Hopefully, one of the talk show hosts or other conservative programs will pick this up and give it a good shot in the arm so that the rate of growth across the country will expand rapidly.

We can keep trying, working, and praying for that eventuality. I was taught at an early age to "work like everything depends on you...pray like everything depends on Him, because it does in both cases."

There's no reason for this as the design was due to the topography of the area, NOT some idea about promoting Muslim beliefs.

Then why is it called 'CRESCENT of Embrace"?

The 'CRESCENT' is a universally recognized symbol of ISLAM!

I DO happen to know that the symbol of Islam looks like...

The one's calling the design the "Crescent of Embrace" are those promoting the petition against the memorial. The U.S. government is NOT calling the site the "Crescent of Embrace."

Those against the memorial are editorializing the idea just by calling it "crescent" and emotionally charging the issue.

Here's a link to the (official) Flight 93 Memorial Project Website. It shows the chosen design and at the top of the page it is clearly called 'The CRESCENT of EMBRACE' which is the NAME given to the design by the architect (NOT by those opposed to the use of a crescent shape).

Go here:

http://www.flight93memorialproject.org/crescent_of_embrace.asp

And here's an excerpt of the design description on that page where you can read the 'CRESCENT OF EMBRACE' again:

BOWL
Through the gesture of embrace, a curving landform formally de.nes the edge of the Bowl. The CRESCENT OF EMBRACE enhances the form and monumental scale of the Bowl to commemorate the heroic actions of the passengers and crew of Flight 93. An allee of Red Maple trees gently descends around the Bowl, crossing the wetlands, to the focal point of the Bowl, the Sacred Ground. Behind the walkway occur forty groves of Sugar and Red Maples and a ring road that leads to parking near the Sacred Ground.

Actually, the designer of the proposed memorial called it the "Crescent of Embrace". That's his name.
The winning designers, Paul and Milena Murdoch of Los Angeles, called being selected "an incredible honor."

"There's a huge emotional investment," said Paul Murdoch, 48, his voice choking.

After months of excitement surrounding the design competition, which drew more than 1,000 entries, the project will now move into intense fund-raising and logistical work. No cost estimate or timetable has been set for construction of the memorial, but it will take years.

For the Murdochs, their design evolved all at once, they said, and nothing in it is more important than anything else.

"The idea of the Crescent of Embrace", Murdoch said, "is to be a gesture of healing and bonding. The crescent marks the edge of the land, which will remain largely untouched."

"It's simple and yet it's complex," said Dorothy Garcia, whose husband, Andy, died in the crash. "The void that's there speaks so loudly to the heroism of these 40 souls."

One of the important attributes of the winning design, Murdoch said, is that it allows the memorial to continually grow and change. The maple trees that create the crescent will be planted at just 15 or 20 feet tall. They won't reach maturity for 40 or 50 years.

"It will be open and evolving as long as it's there," he said. "Our memorial is not about offering explanation for what happened, but to allow people to come to terms with it."
- From the Pittsburgh Post Gazette
Since that time, he has made vague references to changing the name, but not the intent, of the design.

Sorry, for me, that's not good enough. Any red crescent is unacceptable. Close it off into a full circle...make another symbol.

The fact is, the designer himself recognized it as a crescent and called it that. It will go red in the fall of the year, every year, surrounding that hallowed ground. Our enemies will be emboldened by that symbology...and in my estimation, we will be shamed.

Others may feel differently...so be it, I will continue to do all I can to fight it.

But let's make no mistake, when announced, the symbol was called and meant to be a "crescent". If completed, that's what it will look like and be...a cresent of maple trees that turns a rich red each fall.

If the dude gave it the name "Crescent of Embrace" he is a moron and it was more than accidental that the place had a Muslim look to it. He knew exactly what he was aiming for. The stories about it just being about the topography were nonsense.

He should have just finished the "crescent" and made it a circle.

Exactly...that is what we have been saying and why we were are pushing this petition. Please sign with us.

He most certainly could have anf sould have closed it into a circle...but instead he called it a crescent and insured that it would turn red around 911 each year.

To me...it is a travesty and an abomination that sullies the memory, the honor, and the sacrifice of those who stopped their terrorist hijackers.
