Pleasee sign this petition opposing the "Crescent of Embrace" design being developed for the Flight 93 memorial. Despite vague comments by the designer and the Park Service, the design is going forward as yet unchanged.

PETITION: Oppose the "Crescent of Embrace " Proposal for the Flight 93 Memorial

We must, as US citizens oppose this travesty and make our voices heard. If enough of us do so, we will be successful as we were in opposing the Flag Raising Monument in January of 2002 that had been planned for the WTC Flag Raising.

Start your email chains, link to it on your sites, talk it up in the forums you frequent, call your relatives and friends, inform your neighbors.

I thought they'd already rejected that design for the memorial. I'll sign anyway, JIC.

Er... Jeff.
People might take this petition more seriously if the spelling of "petition" is corrected...

I wonder how much they're going to have to pay for 24-hr security to prevent angry crowds with chainsaws.

No, I'm not threatening anything. Reality check here: after Columbine, trees were planted, one for every dead student -- including the ones that caused the massacre. Angry parents came and either chopped down or dug up those two trees. (Sorry, don't remember exactly which.) No one tried to stop them. I don't believe that those trees were ever replanted either.

Nope...they vaguely said they might change the name...but not the intent. Nothing definitive has happened yet and it is up to us as citizens to keep the heat on until they actually change it. It is amazing...and an absolute travesty IMHO.

Please forward it...I will notify the Park Service and the US Congress regarding the petition and its signatures.

Exactly...I heard it was only 1/2 degree or so off. If true, there is no accident or coincidence there IMHO in such an alignement.

Done.

Especially since rewriting history for the sake of political correctness is a horrible thing to do.

What's it going to be. Firefighters in a wheel chair wearing arab robes.

Sort of:

Architect offers to alter Flight 93 memorial to appease critics

By KIMBERLY HEFLING
The Associated Press

WASHINGTON - The architect of the memorial to a plane downed in western Pennsylvania on Sept. 11, 2001, said Wednesday he would work to satisfy critics who complained that it honors terrorists with its crescent-shaped design.

Designer Paul Murdoch said he is "somewhat optimistic" that the spirit of the design could be maintained.

"It's a disappointment there is a misinterpretation and a simplistic distortion of this, but if that is a public concern, then that is something we will look to resolve in a way that keeps the essential qualities," Murdoch, 48, of Los Angeles, said in a telephone interview.

Murdoch's design, "Crescent of Embrace," was selected last week during a meeting of the Flight 93 Advisory Commission. It had been one of five finalists, narrowed down from 1,011.

The recommendation of the 15-member jury consisting of design professionals and family and community members still needs to be approved by the Interior Department.

The memorial would be located at the crash site in Somerset County, near Shanksville. Its shape is a circle broken by the flight pattern of the plane, which supporters have said follows the topography of the area.

Chris Martin, spokesman for the Flight 93 National Memorial, said Wednesday that family members and federal advisory commission members turned to Murdoch for assistance.

Rep. Tom Tancredo, R-Colo., sent a letter Tuesday to National Park Service Director Fran Mainella saying many have questioned the shape "because of the crescent's prominent use as a symbol in Islam - and the fact that the hijackers were radical Islamists."

Will Adams, spokesman for Tancredo, said Wednesday that Tancredo would be happy with the changes only if the crescent shape is removed.

Well, they should take it seriously anyway. But thanks just the same.

That mispelling is just here on FR within the thread...on the site is correct. I will ask the moderators to correct it here on this page...it is correct in the title on the FR thread list.

Moderator, could you fix the spelling of Petition in the link in the body of the thread?

Since that time...and those "sort of" vague statements...nothing has happened. We have to keep the heat on. Folks who would even consider such a design in the first place are not going to change unless the pressure builds to a crescendo and holds there IMHO.
