U.S. Sen. Jon Corzine (news, bio, voting record) acknowledged a little nervousness as he voted Tuesday in his race for governor of New Jersey, one of several contests being closely monitored for evidence of how the GOP's recent struggles are influencing voters.

Tuesday's voting in New Jersey concluded a campaign that featured more personal attacks than actual talk about the issues. The races there and in Virginia — together the biggest contests in this off-year election season — broke spending records in both states, got progressively nasty and yet remained close.
Several New Jersey voters said Tuesday they were turned off by the candidates' negative campaigning.

Exactly! I remember the fuel they got in the 2002 elections when they won the Virginia governor race with Mike Warner in November 2001. I also remember the fuel they got in 2004 when they won the Louisiana governor race with Kathleen Blanco in November 2003 . (extreme sarcasm).
What would the test for the GOP be, whether they can win elections they aren't supposed to? Honestly, we heard this same crap before the 2002 and 2004 elections. The real "test" for Republicans is whether they can pursue the agenda upon which they campaigned.
I would love to vote for Kilgore but I already voted for Forrester. Maybe if I was a DimRat I could vote in both states.
Too bad I'm registered Republican. As a Democrat, the law wouldn't apply to me and I could vote in VA. Multiple times.
It's liberal media gloating for the whole year that can get to you. .... like the bumper sticker says:
"Annoy the Media, vote Republican"
I gave up my right to vote in Virginia in 1997 when I moved to Nevada, but I suppose that if I had continued voting absentee, I could have retained my franchise.
But then I would have had to prove something else, like I paid the annual car tax to Fairfax county or something. And at the time, that was reason enough to leave Virginia.
Most of Virginia is what is considered a "red" state, except for the northern counties, which are but an extension of Washington DC, and made up mostly of Federal employees, already notoriously pro-Democrat.
I guess we can count on any Democratic victory today to be spun as "the turning of the tide," and a harbinger of an end to the era of Republican hegemony. You know, like they tried to do with Mary Landrieu in 2002.

However, '06 isn't exacly looking to be a banner GOP year.
Your other two examples don't count because the GOP wasn't facing the problems its facing now.
I'm impressed with the Republican phone effort. In the last two days, I've received vote-for-Kilgore calls from Tom Davis, Rudy Guliani, and President Bush.
You are right on the money. The GOP can only gain from today's vote. Both Governerships (VA & NJ) are Democrat, so if the Dems win they are just hoding seats they already own. But, if one of the Pubbies wins, or both races are very tight, the Dems are going toward a rough 2006. The Dems should clean up today big time, but they won't. All this poll junk about GW is hogwash. If the Dems don't slam big today, they are in deep doo-doo for next year. Holding their own ain't gonna cut it!!! Just relive 2002 and 2004 and you will see that I am exactly right. Now, if the impossible occurs and Kilgore wins in VA and Forrester wins in NJ, the Democrat Party is toast for a long time!!!
On the other hand, if the Republicans pull off upset wins in either or both states, the MSM will only report the "razor-thin margin of victory."
