Ousted CBS Producer Mary Mapes Comes Out Swinging
The Washington Post ^ | Novermber 9, 2005 | Howard Kurtz

Posted on 11/08/2005 9:48:08 PM PST by Senator Goldwater

After a year of silence about the biggest scandal in CBS News history, Mary Mapes has plenty to say -- about George W. Bush, Karl Rove, Les Moonves, her father, bloggers, the mainstream press and others who she believes contributed to her downfall. What took her so long? "I was extremely battered," she said in an interview yesterday. "I'd had months and months of having my head kicked around a soccer stadium by much of the Western world. I needed some time to regroup." Mapes is now pushing a book, called "Truth and Duty," about the botched "60 Minutes II" story on Bush's National Guard service that led to her firing. She ladles out plenty of blame but largely defends what she still considers a fair piece of reporting, although an independent panel accused CBS of having "failed miserably" to authenticate the documents before rushing the story to air. "I'm a human being; I do things wrong from the first breath I take in the morning," Mapes said. "I don't in any way feel I am without responsibility in this. . . . I probably shouldn't have been as pliable or as malleable as I was" when her bosses were finalizing the story. "This is a huge shortcoming. I didn't know how to say no. . . . I was trying very hard to please them." She praises Dan Rather as "a tremendously loyal person" and says the story cost him his anchor job. "Dan was betrayed by a number of people, certainly by the company he has gotten up and worked for every morning for 40 years," Mapes said.

Has anybody seen the face on this gal? ugh. double bag it.

That's a nasty comment. Comments like this will make Mary Mapes' palms get sweaty and make the little girl in her want to cry behind a door:

“And right now, on the Internet, it appeared everything was falling apart. I had a real physical reaction as I read the angry online accounts. It was something between a panic attack, a heart attack, and a nervous breakdown. My palms were sweaty; I gulped and tried to breathe. . . . The little girl in me wanted to crouch and hide behind the door and cry my eyes out."

"Truth and Duty" unloads on Rove, the White House senior adviser, calling him "the mastermind of the Republican attack against the story." Asked about this, Mapes said Rove was "an inspirational figure" for the critics. "I'm not saying I had any proof at all" of his involvement.

First of all, "mastermind" denotes "involvement." The retraction clearly shows that she is insane; this is like saying that Karl Marx was the "mastermind" of the Soviet Union.

Second, didn't one of us get the ball rolling on this story? I wasn't aware that we took orders from Karl Rove.

"A low moment came when her father, from whom she has been estranged for 15 years, publicly accused her of trying to "promote radical feminism." Mapes says he was an abusive alcoholic."

Bet Dad could tell the documents were fake, whether or not he was in the bag.

Mapes can start her return to mental health by admitting she was pushing forgeries by Burkett.

What's more, the left considers their firing a "new McCarthyism" when truth be told these lying liars abused the powers at their hand to try to steal an election by engaging in Zogbyism, making up smears and negative news against conservative opponents (Zogby biased the numbers in his election day "poll").

They deserve a fate worse than McCarthy's subsequent alcoholism and infamy.

I heard a clip of her interview on the radio.

(1) Nice voice. She's got the voice and (apparently) the face for radio.

(2) You couldn't "prove" to this chick that she is alive if she thought it would help Republicans.

There is no return for a socialist crook pyschopathic liar megalomaniac minor league propagandist like Mary Mapes.

They ought to put her on exhibit in a freak show.

That is a Howler! FR and the Bloggers had the story roasting on a spit within hours and Rove had nothing to do with it. Mapes got a 200K advance for the book. I hope she can make it last a long time. She is radioactive in journalism.

"I was extremely battered,..."

Well, boo hoo. Funny how they can dish it but can't take it.

Perhaps we can play a couple of done me wrong songs for her.

"There's a tear in mah beer..."

Well, someone else run with it. I'm too tired to be creative.

Mapes remains incorrigibly arrogant

Despite her career implosion, Mapes hopes to stay in journalism.

"It's what I'm good at," she said. "I like making a difference."

You were supposed to report the news, not make a 'difference'.
