This Reader's Digest condensed version brought Hayek's ideas to a mass audience in April 1945. It is a condensation of Hayek's influential classic, which explains why political freedom is impossible without economic freedom, why expanding the agenda for government requires expanding the use of compulsion, why this eventually attracts thugs into positions of power, and why any kind of statism -- socialism, fascism, Nazism and so on -- is the kiss of death for civilized life. A perfect first-read for someone you'd like to introduce to these ideas.
To beat Hillary and the rest of the Democrap socialist/facists in '06 & '08, I have just written Reader's Digest with a pleading request to republish the condensed version of Hayek's "The Road to Serfdom" they did in 1945, and which surely saved America from the fate the Euro-Socialists currently greatly suffer under.

I concur with your opinion of the importance of Hayek's work- I personally consider TRTS the most important book written during the twentieth century. However, Readers' Digest is not what it once was, and I'm doubtful that they'll take you up on your proposition.

The only thing wrong with Hayek's Nobel Prize was that Ludwig von Mises never won one.

I don't mind the effort, and sadly, not a RD reader myself, you may be 100% correct.
The NYT's was once a patriotic rag itself!

Weird coincidence! I'm currently reading "The Road to Serfdom" with the forward by Milton Friedman.

I don't like misspelling either, but do so quite often, and keep a Websters handy.
Usually it's just my typing! What did I misspell?

These are good ideas, but they are too ponderous. There are too many deep eyeglazers, starting with the initial discussion of how post-war Britain contains pre-War Germanic tendencies. I had to step out on the back porch for a breath of fresh-air after looking that consciousness-deadener in the face. And then, the word-choices. Just to name one: workingman. What a blast from an ancient dusty past that word is. 1905 anyone?
This piece is great, but it's historical. It was written not only before the fall of the Soviet Union, but before the Korean War. It's good background, and could be included in any university or high-school western civ/econ class with good effect.
But as a rallying call for 21st century free-marketeers?
I don't think so.
