WAL-MART BANS CHRISTMAS: BOYCOTT LAUNCHED
Catholic League ^ | 9 November 2005 | William Donohue

WAL-MART BANS CHRISTMAS:

BOYCOTT LAUNCHED

A woman who recently complained to Wal-Mart that the store was replacing “Merry Christmas” with “Happy Holidays” received an e-mail response from Customer Service. It appears below in its exact form:

“Walmart is a world wide organization and must remain conscious of this. The majority of the world still has different practices other than ‘christmas’ which is an ancient tradition that has its roots in Siberian shamanism. The colors associated with ‘christmas’ red and white are actually a representation of of the aminita mascera mushroom. Santa is also borrowed from the Caucuses, mistletoe from the Celts, yule log from the Goths, the time from the Visigoth and the tree from the worship of Baal. It is a wide wide world.”

To which Catholic League president Bill Donohue says: “This statement was signed by someone called Kirby. When I read it, I thought he might be drunk. But I was wrong. We sent Kirby’s response to Wal-Mart’s headquarters only to find that Dan Fogleman, Senior Manager, Public Relations, agrees. After acknowledging that he read Kirby’s response, Fogleman said, in part, the following”:

“As a retailer, we recognize some of our customers may be shopping for Chanukah or Kwanza gifts during this time of year and we certainly want these customers in our stores and to feel welcome, just as we do those buying for Christmas. As an employer, we recognize the significance of the Christmas holiday among our family of associates…and close our stores in observance, the only day during the year that we are closed.”

Bill Donohue says: “It’s nice to know that Wal-Mart is closed on a federal holiday. Now here is why I am asking the leaders of 126 religious organizations that span seven religious communities to boycott Wal-Mart. Go to its website and search for Hanukkah and up come 200 items. Click on Kwanzaa and up come 77. Click on Christmas, and here’s what you get: ‘We’ve brought you to our ‘Holiday’ page based on your search.’ In other words, Wal-Mart is practicing discrimination.”

We take as worth zero about Christmas the statement of anyone who would make a claim to Karma.

>>>I'd hate to pick on Walmart, but I must admit, I am troubled by this and hope that their discrimination against Christmas ceases immediately.>>>

If this is sarcasm, it's brilliantly funny.

If not, it's pathetically sad.

I hope it's the former cause I like a laugh.

The search facts are essentially correct. 'Christmas' get you a Christmas tree and a few ornaments. 'Kwanzaa' and 'Hanukkah' get dozens of childrens books and CDs. Apparently WalMart couldn't find any Christmas books or music.

Actually, if you look under 'holiday' you will find some stuff.

I searched for Kwanza (1), Kwaanza (3) and Kwanzaa (77). Couldn't find Chanukka 'cause I couldn't remember how it's spelt. Christmas yielded nothing by "holidays". So, the "search" count seems legit, even though I agree the e-mail is kind of strange.

The Catholic League = Anti-Defamation League.

Thanks for the "Heads-Up". I was unaware of that.
I suppose their like Baptists in that area - all that claims to be, is not.

I don't think so. If they directed all of their clients of various faiths and beliefs to the Holiday page, I would believe it's pick on WalMart time. However, the poster is correct - you can find Kwanzaa, Hanukkah, Ramadan, but no match for Christmas. It's not inclusive, it's discriminatory.

I'll shop somewhere else, thank you. And, I told them so.

I don't think a boycott will work necessarily, but if they have some cranky ex-customers, they may rethink their position.

Last year I avoided Target because of the Salvation Army issue.

This year I'm avoiding any merchant that advertises 'Holiday' instead of 'Christmas'.

Funny, they have no problem offending Christians but not others.

Because Christians just take it.

Not me, not anymore.

There were 63 wiccan items, and 799 easter items. Think Walmart is wondering why all these people are doing all these strange searches?

Fat chance! Discrimination against Christians seems the rule more than the exception. I don't mind it especifically because it is against Christians, but because it is discrimination in a country and time that proclaims discrimination is evil. It's called double standard.

One of the bits I do in my standup routine:

My wife discovered the Hallmark Channel. It's like the Oxygen Channel with the feminine hygene commercials removed and replaced by greeting cards.

At least they have Walker Texas Ranger on at 7pm. If it weren't for Walker, I would no doubt be doing showtunes unstead of comedy.

With the holiday season coming up, every show is "A Very Special Christmas"...A Very Special Little House...A Very Special Waltons...A Very Special Touched By An Angel.

And they're all the SAME! Some dead person becomes an angel and comes back to help a dysfunctional family.

The only two spirits of dead guys that help my family through the holidays...Jim Beam and Johnny Walker.

You know there is a town in Mexico named Usa where a lot of manufacturers moved..

That was an old urban ledgend, but it started with a 'small island off the coast of Japan' just after WWII.

I think Kirby's been hitting a few mushrooms himself. < :P

"Wal-Mart spent $18 billion on goods from Chinese suppliers in 2004. They spent $150 billion on goods from US suppliers. The poster hasn't a clue about what it speaks."

Worth repeating. Perhaps the folks who make ridiculous statments, like saying that Walmart only has Chinese products, will read it. I doubt it, though. It's much more fun to say stupid things.
