Pat Robertson Warns Pa. Town of Disaster

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (AP) - Religious broadcaster Pat Robertson warned residents of a rural Pennsylvania town Thursday that disaster may strike there because they "voted God out of your city" by ousting school board members who favored teaching intelligent design.

All eight Dover, Pa., school board members up for re-election were defeated Tuesday after trying to introduce "intelligent design" - the belief that the universe is so complex that it must have been created by a higher power - as an alternative to the theory of evolution.

"I'd like to say to the good citizens of Dover: If there is a disaster in your area, don't turn to God. You just rejected him from your city," Robertson said on the Christian Broadcasting Network's "700 Club."

Eight families had sued the district, claiming the policy violates the constitutional separation of church and state. The federal trial concluded days before Tuesday's election, but no ruling has been issued.

Later Thursday, Robertson issued a statement saying he was simply trying to point out that "our spiritual actions have consequences."

"God is tolerant and loving, but we can't keep sticking our finger in his eye forever," Robertson said. "If they have future problems in Dover, I recommend they call on Charles Darwin. Maybe he can help them."

Robertson made headlines this summer when he called on his daily show for the assassination of Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez.

In October 2003, he suggested that the State Department be blown up with a nuclear device. He has also said that feminism encourages women to "kill their children, practice witchcraft, destroy capitalism and become lesbians."

Robertson's words were twisted in the the first line of the story to make him look worse.

Here's what he said:

"I'd like to say to the good citizens of Dover: If there is a disaster in your area, don't turn to God. You just rejected him from your city,"

"God is tolerant and loving, but we can't keep sticking our finger in his eye forever," Robertson said. "If they have future problems in Dover, I recommend they call on Charles Darwin. Maybe he can help them."

I don't think anyone needs to twist his words to make him look bad, He does that well enough on his own.

Could you point out the exact words that bother you in what you quoted?

Rejecting ID is sticking a finger in God's eye? I thought all those pro-ID nutcases were trying to convince the rest of us it's not about religion..... Wow, guess that was a lie.

Well, I'm sure this would not include Robertson as he is a preacher.

And that means we are required to defend him at all costs? Sorry, but that's not my thing. That's more like how the Muslims who refuse to condemn al-Qaeda outright behave.

This is exactly the reason why the GOP is stereotyped as bible thumpers.

No you're wrong. I doubt you've experienced it or you couldn't say that. I have five dead children and no living ones. People like you are why that I never attend church even though I love Yeshuah.

No one is requiring that you defend Robertson at all costs.

However, some take every opportunity possible to cooperate with the MSM in trashing him every opportunity they get.

"Eight families had sued the district, claiming the policy violates the constitutional separation of church and state."

It would not violate the seperation of church and state which refers to the seperation of POWERS of church and state.

As to Robertson's comments: he is frustrated and I've heard far worse. But knowing how the media has been all over his remarks in the past, he should be more careful.

That siad, not permitting the teaching of ID in the Public Schools, as much as I believe it does no harm, is not rejecting God from them.

When he says something as incredibly stupid as he did in this case, he deserves to be trashed.

"Crises tend to make people think more seriously about things, so there is a redemptive purpose for them."

The above may be true, but it doesn't give some people the right to force a crisis on other people.

To defend liars as paragons of rightouesness is just incomprehensible to me...as is the fact that self described Christians would consider it justifiable to lie, deceive, and delude in the pursuit of what they consider to be truth!

All religious nutbars are the same - they don't consider lying to unbelievers to be a sin.

As for Robertson, he showed his true colors when he blamed America for 9/11. Scumbag.

some people the right to force a crisis on other people.

I was talking about the potential redemption in crises which God may allow.

I'm not sure what you're referring to in regards to people forcing crises on other people.

To any atheists reading this article; do not judge christianity by people like Pat Robertson.

Athiests are liars and semi-retarded so even if you increased the font size about 5 times and turned on blinking it wouldn't help. They still babble about Adolf Hitler being a model Christian.
