Jimmy Stewart had started to fly before World War II. He served as a Group Commander with the Eighth Air Force and flew lead aircraft on 19 missions over enemy targets. He became an AF Brigadier General. Years later when Stewart was at Carswell for the filming of the movie "Strategic Air Command" he spoke at a flying safety meeting.
My father, himself a WW II vet, used to tell a story I have never seen in print and may very well be a tall tale: Supposedly Stewart was told by a snooty London hotel clerk that company policy would not permit him to issue a room to an actor. Stewart whipped out his ID card and said, Make that GENERAL James Stewart. Very good, Sir. We are happy to accommodate generals.

what a wonderful story. Jimmy Stewart was a great actor & had a wonderful sense of humor .. and if this story is true, was NOT afraid to pull rank!
