VIOLENCE continued early yesterday in deprived city areas of France with at least 374 cars burnt out and 212 arrests, despite an official ban on public meetings in an attempt to curb riots that have rocked the nation.
In the 17th night of disturbances two police officers were injured, with one hospitalised after being hit by a metal object in the Paris suburb of La Courneuve.
Incidents involving the burning of cars also spread overnight to several towns in neighbouring Belgium.
Latest French police figures followed further unrest between youths and police, including a major clash on Saturday in the centre of the city of Lyon.
Police said the situation in racially mixed suburbs throughout France had been calmer than on previous nights.
But cars were reported set alight in Lyon, Toulouse and St Etienne.
The ban on assemblies came into force at 10am on Saturday and was set to last till yesterday at 8am, prohibiting "all meetings likely to start or fuel disorder."
The violence, described as the worst in France since the 1968 student riots, erupted after the accidental deaths of two youths, electrocuted in an electrical sub-station where they were hiding from police.
Commenting on the alienation of ethnic minorities perceived to be at the heart of the crisis, the Paris Sunday newspaper Le Journal du Dimanche suggested that part of the trouble was that France had "refused to impose even the rudiments of a knowledge of the language and its laws on immigrants and their children".

If George W. Bush had showed this kind of multi-week mishandling of a crisis in the U.S., the Dems and the media would be calling for his head.
...but the French screw the poodle and it's no big deal to the MSM or other appeasenik Leftists.

Don't be so hasty to judge freedom - so-called "free" adults in the USA aren't even allowed to decide whether to wear seatbelts or not. To cite one of thousands of examples of petty and not-so-petty tyranny.

Chirac has vision of the last days of Rome and says: "Oh dear what will we do now?"
I wonder how many are burning their own cars now to collect the insurance? No one would ask any questions at this point...
Regarding the lower "burned-car-count?"
Could be because people are no longer parking their cars on the streets, so there are fewer vehicles for yutes to burn.
Besides a church or school is such a bigger fire and attacks Christianity or government.
I see this as the beginning of something. The nuanced French solution of throwing money at the problem won't work. Muslim yutes will use the money to buy weapons.
The nuanced French are in deep doo-doo and haven't a clue.
If I wasn't reading this on the internet, it'd probably feel like the late 1930's, early 40's all over again.
But this time, who's france gonna call for help?
"Save yourself, froggie..."
In fact, I think we are already at this point. It might take 1,000 cars in an night to put this story back on the front pages.
True enough. Motocycle helmets, Breathalyzer and field sobriety tests at roadblocks, even just parking your car to take a hike in the woods will draw police attention. Citizens submit to these laws under the guise of "safety" and our freedoms are chipped away one bit at a time.
5 cars in a US slum would make the front page of every yellow sheet here.
