MOSCOW, November 15 (RIA Novosti) - The Global Orbiting Navigation Satellite System (GLONASS) will be fully operational in 2007, the head of the Russian Space Agency said Tuesday at a meeting with the Russian president.
Anatoly Perminov said the president had given orders to restore GLONASS by 2007 while visiting the Baikonur Space Center in Kazakhstan last summer.
"The system will be operational by that time," Perminov said, adding that the agency was successfully implementing the federal GLONASS program.
Under the federal space program approved by the government, the GLONASS grouping will be increased to the minimal level of 18 satellites by 2007. Currently, the system includes 14 satellites in orbit.
Good news for Russia. GLONASS started in 1972 and not fully operational now.
I hear it's going to be the most accurate GPS device that they have, (within + or - 5 miles.)
So the Russian's can watch the Sopranos.
Excuse me. So the Russian milatary can patch into The Sopranos and PBS.
I'm sure our tax dollars paid for it.
As for the US tax dollars, I don't know, but in this case the Russian intellegence would look incredibly smart.
You know, Russian pilots (in Chechnya) says that Americans often turn off GPS for them, so GLONASS is necessary for our guys.
Russian industry now produces combined GPS+GLONASS devices for military and civil purposes.
I don't think that's possible. A GPS navigator is a receiver not a transmitter. IMHO. And noway the US would give Russia access to military signal.
I don't understand. Please explain.
