I-Team: Inside the MS-13 and the effort to stop it [Texas]
KENS 5 Eyewitness News ^ | 11/18/2005 | Brandy Ralston

They are members of possibly the most violent gang in America today, and they're showing up right here in San Antonio.

The Mara Salvatrucha, or MS-13, is an extremely violent gang, known for using intimidation and extortion and has built a reputation of being enforcers. In other words, you do what they say or you're going to pay a price.

Salvadorian refugees started MS-13 as a street gang. Now, with more than 10,000 members, the gang is considered one of the fastest-growing and most violent street gangs in the nation.

"They're very ruthless in the way they, if somebody's done something that's not all of what they want done, it's going to be dealt with violently," said Al Peña of the San Antonio division of Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

"It's going to be a clear message that you do not cross them, you do not mess with them, you follow what they want done," Peña. said.

It is this type of violence that has captured the attention of not only ICE officials, but also the FBI.

"We've recently created a national task force that is focusing on the Mara Salvatrucha," said FBI spokesman Rene Salinas.

The FBI has even declared the MS-13 a top priority — ranking second only to national terrorism.

"They are well-organized and they're extremely violent, and we are working along with our state and local police agencies in attacking these individuals and taking them out of circulation." Salinas said.

Takedowns such as one two weeks ago in Houston in which the MS-13 broke into a home only to find the FBI SWAT team waiting for them.

"When the MS-13 showed up, they kicked the door in and immediately started firing," Salinas said.

Two members of the gang were killed and two others injured.

A fifth member was captured, which sent a message to the MS-13:

"We'll be coming looking for you," Salinas said.

"We'll do our very best to protect the public."

That effort starts at our borders.

In Laredo, nearly 200 illegal immigrants come through that sector each day — and each one is put on record.

And with two to three members making it into Texas each week, you can never be too careful.

Because if they make it through, they wind up here, on the street.

"There are here to prey on the public, anybody that's vulnerable. They're in for profit - there are in it for the money." Peña. said — "either through drug-trafficking, through prostitution, through various crimes, through extortion, through intimidation, violence."

That's why ICE initiated Operation Community Shield.

The operation is designed to go after the MS-13.

"It was a project aimed at disrupting, dismantling, and prosecuting." Peña. said.

And so far, it has worked.

"We did raids, we went out to various locations early in the morning looking for these people."

And they found them, with 582 arrests nationwide, 14 of them right here in San Antonio.

Once they're caught, they are put in the system. Those with criminal charges face prosecution. The rest are put on a plane and sent back to El Salvador, although authorities know some of them will return again.

While several MS-13 members have been captured here in San Antonio, the good news is that many are not staying here.

According to authorities, those who make it through San Antonio keep moving farther north, with the largest populations now being seen in Virginia and the Midwest.

If a fence goes up along Mexico's southern border (instead of between the U.S. and Mexico), it will be done in response to MS gangs...and in furtherance of C.F.R.'s stated goal to create a security zone consisting of the NAFTA countries (de facto elimination of the borders between the NAFTA countries).

I wonder about the rest of the arrests, where were they and how many arrested in each place.

It is not a street gang. It is a hostile army.

There ought to be a mandatory 20 years for anyone caught returning after deportation and it should be enforced!

I like the idea of dropping 'em back into their home country - from about 20,000 feet.

When I hear of raids like the one described in this story, I'm always disappointed when any of the bad guys are arrested - and not killed.

I have family up that way and know what kind of problem it is. I'd just deport anybody with a tattoo on their neck and be done with it.

They have the figures wrong. The last I read there are over 60,000 members. Maybe they mean 10,000 in the US alone. Even if there were just 5, that's 5 too many!!

ICE ADDS MS-13 GANG MEMBER TO ITS “MOST WANTED” LIST
Nearly 200 MS-13 Gang Members Apprehended Nationwide by ICE Since February
Photo of David Rivera.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Michael J. Garcia, Department of Homeland Security Assistant Secretary for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), today announced that ICE is adding a violent gang member -- who has a string of felony convictions and is wanted for questioning in connection with several murders in Los Angeles -- to its list of “Most Wanted” fugitives. Rivera is the first member of the gang Mara Salvatrucha (MS-13) to make the ICE Most Wanted fugitives list.

David Rivera (a.k.a. Gerber Alfaro Bonilla and Herbert Bonilla), a known member of MS-13, is wanted by ICE on charges of re-entering the United States after deportation, pursuant to a January 4, 2005 complaint issued in the Central District of California. The violation carries a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison. A warrant has been issued for his arrest.

Rivera is also wanted for questioning by the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) in connection with a string of murders in Los Angeles that were carried out in his name between 1999 and 2001. The LAPD also seeks to question Rivera about his suspected drug activity in Los Angeles.

Rivera’s criminal record includes past convictions for lewd and lascivious acts with a minor; possession of a firearm by a felon; illegal possession of ammunition; and repeated convictions for possession of a controlled substance with intent to sell. Rivera went into hiding after his arrest on charges of raping a 12-year-old girl and witness intimidation in April 2001. The rape charges against Rivera were dropped after the chief witness in the case was found murdered.

Rivera is 5 feet 5 inches tall and weighs 135 pounds, with black hair and brown eyes. He also has a mole close to his right eye. His last known address was 619 S Rampart Blvd. # 206 Los Angeles, Calif., 90057. Rivera has family ties in the Los Angeles area. He was born in Mexico and has provided the following birth dates: 10/26/1974, 10/25/1978 and 11/25/1978.

“David Rivera is a violent and dangerous criminal who needs to be taken off the streets as soon as possible. One of our most important homeland security missions at ICE is ensuring public safety. With the public’s help and tools like the ‘Most Wanted’ fugitives list, we can work together to identify, apprehend and prosecute fugitives like David Rivera who pose a direct threat to our communities,” said Assistant Secretary Garcia (snip)

The best armed citizen with the finest weapons and training in the world doesn't stand a chance against any attacker with the sole goal to wound or kill, if they don't know the attack is about to take place.

We do not and cannot maintain a 24/7 high alert consciousness as individuals. That kind of status requires teamwork along the levels performed by the SEALS or a Delta Team. Our local cops and federal agents have the communications but even they aren't on high alert all the time.

Gang members of the MS-13 should be arrested and jailed because they are criminals with continual violence as a primary goal.

I find it funny that the same people who oppose a fence along our borders are allies of those who are THEMSELVES allies of those who oppose fences to secure borders...here, look at these pics...

So, don't let the OBL morons here fool you...MS-13, MeCHa, La Raza...all are TERRORISTS, and the associate with the worst terrorists on the planet. And therefore, since we cannot ascertain just which ILLEGAL INFILTRATORS might or might NOT be part of/sympathetic to these a-holes...they all stay the F home!

Plus there's the whole Koranimal partnership thing...

So, is cheap lettuce, clean toilets, and groomed lawns worth it?
