When Rebecca Beach, a freshman at Warren Community College in New Jersey e-mailed faculty announcing a campus program yesterday featuring decorated Iraq war hero Lt. Col. Scott Rutter, the response she got from one English professor took her aback.

English professor John Daly replied: "Real freedom will come when soldiers in Iraq turn their guns on their superiors."

Daly added that he would ask his students to boycott the event and also vowed "to expose [her] right-wing, anti-people politics until groups like [Rebecca’s] won’t dare show their face on a college campus."

Someone should tell Comrade Daly, that the only time he knows about the people is when he looks down to see what he's been stepping on. BTW, does anyone here know anything about this putz?

I heard him getting knocked around on one of the radio shows today. I think it was the Tony Snow show with John Gibson calling him a coward because he wouldn't repeat the statement on the air.

This is what I mailed to Comrade Daly:

By now, you may have already received a number of letters expressing disagreement with the statements that you have made to Ms. Rebecca Beach. While America isn't perfect, it's still a fine place. One of the reasons why it's a fine place is because of something called 'freedom of speech', which basically means tolerating the right of everyone to speak their mind, even if you don't agree with it. You've been able to enjoy that right by speaking whatever you wished to, and in return, is it really too much to ask that you please extend the right to those who hold differing opinions, such as Ms. Beach Civil disagreement is a hallmark of a free and healthy society, IMHO. You claim that Ms. Beach has been spouting "fascist propaganda", or something along those lines. How exactly is what Ms. Beach has been saying "fascist"? Did she advocate the mass-murder of Jews? Has she gone on record as saying that we should invade and conquer Canada? Did she say that we should disarm all Americans, no matter whether they were responsible, law-abiding citizens of sound mind or not? If anything, refusing to tolerate different opinions than what one holds is what's truly fascist. BTW, you claim that capitalism has killed more people than communism. Might I suggest taking a look at the excellent and highly regarded "The Black Book of Communism"? It's got all sorts of interesting facts and data. Also, if Marxism is the solution, then how come that whenever it's been tried out it always results in failure, poverty, and mass murder? You should thank God that you live in the US, and not North Korea, for example. If you critize Kim Jong-Il, you would probably be quite fortunate if you were merely sent to prison.

Professor John Daly does not desrve to be a teacher. Instead of informing students on the various points of view on any given issue, so they can understand and arrive at individually generated conclusions of their own, he insists on keeping students ignorant with his own personal polemic.

In doing this he disqualifies himself as an educator. As a result he needs to be fired or terminated as an educator
who insists on ignorance in his students, rather than imparting a way for students to arrive at their own wisdom and knowledge.His is a culture of hate and intolereance, and pedantic jingoism. F__k him and the horse he rode in on.

Warren Community College of New Jersey appears not to be a fit place for students, but is simply the barnyard of
" Animal Farm."

I strongly suggest you actually READ some of the articles on this incident before condemning the whole school. I have read a number of articles and the ONLY negative e-mail Ms. Beach stated she received in response to hers was from that one moron Daly. No other faculty members gave her a hard time. He indeed does not belong there, but I fail to see how this warrants your last line of comment.

Any school that allows ignorance and discivilzation to be promoted by even one faculty member tarnishes the whole school and it's administrative policy. Post Secondary education relies on institutional marketing, as you know.
I wouldn't send my Irish Setter to be schooled there , let alone a son or daughter. Thankfully there are many other alternatives where the true paths to wisdom and knowledge are still the leading lights of post secondary institutions. 10 to 30 grand a year is to much to pay to inculcate one's students with jingoism in place of knowledge and a multifaceted approach, even in one English course.That goes for both Liberal and Conservative jingoism BTW, both are anaethemic to the preservation of the Republic.

I hope Daly is held responsible for his conduct, that's why I made the remark about the school and stand by it.
Perhaps I am over sensitive on the issue being an educator myself, with Dartmouth College just down the road! My apologies if I offended you.

One of the fences used in communist countries is allowing college faculty to promote jingoism in students in place of cool analysis. Faculty in communist countries are
the first to be historically executed or re-educated toward jingoism. Daly insists on jingoism. The school should simply not renew his contract as an adjunct professor.

WCCC investigating controversial e-mail
Adjunct instructor’s comments gain national attention

WASHINGTON TWP. (Nov. 18, 2005) – Officials at Warren County Community College are investigating political comments about the war in Iraq made by an adjunct instructor to a student via an e-mail message.

Responding earlier this week to a student’s invitation to attend a student club event, John Daly, an adjunct instructor of Basic Writing and Developmental English, e-mailed the student with a host of his own personal beliefs. The student club event, sponsored by the Young American’s for Freedom, featured Iraq war veteran Lt. Col. Scott Rutter as a guest speaker.

WCCC President Dr. William Austin personally welcomed guests to the event, held on Thursday, and introduced Rebecca Beach, president and secretary of the newly formed club. Lt. Col. Rutter’s talk was well received, and deemed a success by attendees.

WCCC is further investigating Mr. Daly’s conduct and his expression of views in the classroom and on campus.

Indeed, Mr. Daly’s comments have caused much controversy on and off campus. Dr. Austin said, “I personally find Mr. Daly’s e-mail disgraceful and offensive, yet I must maintain that the college be a place for free expression, ideas, and open debate.”

Dr. Austin added, “We must remember that Mr. Daly is just one instructor out of many here. These are apparently his personal political views. He does not represent the college’s views, mission, and core values. We are a small community college and are here to serve the community and will continue to do so.”

The college will continue to keep its pulse on this issue while maintaining its high standards of professionalism and integrity of all concerned, noted Dr. Austin.

WCCC Chairman of the Board, Ed Smith, said, “We are fortunate to live in a world where so many brave men and women are willing to fight and die for our freedoms, including the right to express one’s opinions.”

This seems to defend Daly when in fact Daly's attempt to censor Ms. Beach and his subsequent conduct show every one that Daly is acting to make sure the college IS NOT a place for free expression. ideas and open debate."

Dr. Austin might consider this fact instead of attempting to merely reconstruct Warren College's image. This is what makes Warren College an unacceptable post secondary institution of "higher" learning for senior high school students who are now shopping for a place to attend.

Daly owes a public apology to the student body of Warren College and deserves a dock in pay for the rest of the year, if not a required, tendered resignation.
