A pair of incidents remind us that we are still living in a democracy and peaceful pushback can work, even on a college campus. Both stories involve Young Americans for Freedom. Two years ago, Virginia Tech cut off funding to the campus chapter of YAF when the group invited former U. S. treasurer Bay Buchanan, sister of conservative columnist Pat Buchanan, on campus to speak on immigration reform. Now, "After a long battle, Virginia Tech administrators reversed the Student Budget Board's decision and returned funding to VT YAF," Emily Jashinsky writes in the Winter 2016 issue of Libertas. Libertas is...

Liberal friends curious about how conservative professors actually teach might consider asking them. That’s what Jeisi Zhao of the Young America’s Foundation did in an interview with George Mason University economist Walter Williams. “I teach micro-economic theory, and in my classroom I never talk about the kind of things that I talk about in my syndicated column or on radio,” Dr. Williams told Zhao. “In my classroom, I never talk about these things because they are my preferences and values, and I think it is academic dishonesty for professors to teach students their values.” “I would never teach my preferences....

The Young America’s Foundation has once again compiled an invaluable compendium of this season’s commencement speakers and found, once again, that they overwhelmingly represent one point of view. Moreover, in our review of 127 of the arguably representative speakers they highlight, we note that one-third—41—have discernible political views. By the most expansive definition, one-third of these—10—can be called anything from apolitical to definitively conservative: • Gen. Philip M. Breedlove at the Georgia Institute of Technology, • Former President George W. Bush at Southern Methodist University • Former Secretary of labor , Elaine Chao, retired Admiral Thad Allen, at Georgetown •...

Speaking in New Hampshire last Friday night, Ted Cruz recalled a snarky aside written by New York Times columnist David Brooks, identifying Cruz and Karl Marx as the two people who "believe that power can be wielded directly by the masses." Being lumped in with Marx is a bit unusual for him, Cruz noted, but he's thrilled to be dismissed as a wacky populist by an Establishment shill like Brooks. Cruz, the junior Senator from Texas and first official Republican presidential candidate for 2016, was keynoting the New England Freedom Conference, put on by Young America's Foundation, a far-right group...

All along Young America’s Foundation has said that college campuses nationwide seem to be less and less objective—well now even Michael Bloomberg agrees. At a commencement ceremony at Harvard yesterday, Bloomberg stated that colleges are supposed to be a place where students learn how to think, not where they are told what to think. Just last week, Young America’s Foundation released its 22nd annual “Commencement Speakers Survey” which reveals that 43 liberal speakers and only 9 conservatives are scheduled to speak or have already spoken at this year’s commencement ceremonies at America’s top 100 colleges. Editor's Note: This column was authored by Dr. Stephen Smoot, of Young America's Foundation. Newsweek rhetorically asked America recently, “Why are Obama’s critics (read conservatives) so dumb?” We have to admit that we do fall short of our erudite betters on the Left in the field of expression. YAF's senior national director Aaron Marks was quoted saying Paul was "clearly off his meds," and that YAF was "more aligned with Obama" than Paul on national security. In this, they are reminiscent of Obamabots. All I can say is thank goodness there aren't enough of them to get Ron Paul elected to anything except the House seat he currently enjoys holding. WASHINGTON UNIVERSITY (KMOX Radio) -- Twenty years after the fall of the Berlin Wall, a demonstration at Washington University against socialism was making some students uncomfortable. Students cutting across the campus on a warm fall day heard the Soviet National Anthem in the breeze, coming from loud speakers inside a makeshift prison camp complete with a high-wire fence, blood-stained inmates and goose-stepping guards in Soviet-era uniforms. Organizer Dirk Doebler of the conservative group Young Americans for Liberty says the goal was to show a "liberal-leaning" campus the ugly history of socialism.

Mitt Romney is heading to Reagan country. The former Massachusetts governor is scheduled to speak this Friday to the Young America's Foundation at the Ronald Reagan Ranch Center in Santa Barbara, California. Romney is expected to be the dinner banquet speaker for the foundation's West Coast Leadership Conference, which consists of young conservatives from 44 colleges and universities across 12 states. "Young people provide much of the energy in the conservative movement, and if we are going to be successful as a party we need to harness that energy and put it work on behalf of the principles we all...

Let me see if I have this right: ACORN, in five locations coast-to-coast are on tape counseling tax fraud, tax evasion, money laundering, and the coup de grace, how to set up a whorehouse for 12 to 15-year-old El Salvadoran sex slaves, and now ACORN and the Left are POed about it being exposed without ACORN’s consent?! What else ticks the Left off about ACORN being uncovered assisting in some of the worst kind of scandalous scat known to mankind? Well, if you Google around you’ll find the “progressives” are peeved not because ACORN had the spotlight bare down on...

Campus Progress News Management by: Deidre Almstead, August 10, 2009 My time spent at the Campus Progress National Conference was anything but a welcoming forum to discuss different ideologies. However, in her recent column Emily Rutherford of Campus Progress makes it seem like I was welcome with open and tolerant arms to the Campus Progress National Conference. Unfortunately Emily had to waste her time traveling to the Young America’s Foundation conference before she was kicked out for live-blogging, while Campus Progress tells you not to even bother coming. In her article Rutherford describes the Campus Progress conference as having “welcomed...

What GOP presidential candidate do young conservatives prefer for 2012?.. I had a chance to ask this morning, during my talk at the national conference of the Young America's Foundation. The audience was about 250 conservative student activists. Their views are of course not representative of the general population, college students, or even conservatives. But they do represent something — a level of energy and enthusiasm on the Right. They are an interesting micro-demographic. Their opinions matter. Here's how we did it. I read a list of eight potential candidates: Mitt Romney, Sarah Palin, Bobby Jindal, Tim Pawlenty, Mike Huckabee,...

( – House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) will give the commencement speech at Johns Hopkins University on Thursday. That Pelosi, a liberal Democrat, is speaking at the school should come as no surprise as a new report shows that liberals dominate as speakers at the top colleges and universities in America while only five recognizable conservatives have been chosen as commencement speakers this year. One conservative was even dis-invited as a commencement speaker after his invitation to speak became public, according to the Young America’s Foundation (YAF), which released its report on Wednesday. “For the past 16 years--the time period...

It seems a lot of college professors didn’t like my column last week about academic socialism. Though conspicuously short on details, a University of Oregon professor declared the analogy between grade redistribution and wealth redistribution “really dumb.” (This should show you what sophisticated thinkers most of these professors are: they call everything they disagree with “dumb.”) But I think their real problem is the fact that the YAF video contest made students rethink the Marxist claptrap they’ve been force-fed during their college years.

Chicago Freepers: On Saturday, March 14, 3:00 I will be speaking to the Young America's Foundation convention at the Crowne Plaza O'Hare Hotel. They have asked me to do a booksigning after the last speaker concludes at 5:00. My topic will be "48 Liberal Lies About American History." I do not know what the registration entails, but the other speakers include John Ashcroft, Tim Pawlenty, Tom Tancredo, and Burton Folsom. Also, there is a good likelihood that I will be speaking at the Chicago Homeschool Convention on August 8 at the Schaumburg Convention Center. Don't have a speaking time yet.

Banned conservative speakers, stolen votes, assaults on religious liberty, gay English classes, and forbidden Thanksgiving & Christmas celebrations Political correctness ran amuck in our nation’s school system this past year, and Young America’s Foundation has once again compiled our “best of the worst” academic abuses for 2008. From “free speech zones” to transgendered speakers at military academies, the following list may make you both laugh and cry in the same breath. That probably isn’t too surprising, however, since we are talking about academia after all… 1. The free speech “zone.” A student at Yuba College in California was sent an...
