All the more reason for me not to see a doctor.

Why so? If you were an Ashkenazi Jewish female with a family history of breast cancer, wouldn't you want to check for specific mutations in the BRCA 1 and BRCA 2 genes?

I found the author's discussion of sickle cell trait(SCT) at least slightly curious. While it's a retrospective study with its inherent limitations, here's a politically incorrect tidbit which I doubt that you heard. "A retrospective review of all soldiers in basic training found that those with SCT had a 40-fold increased risk of SED(sudden exertional death)."

N.B. It was probably written by Army docs while Clinton was in office.

Linkage of left ventricular contractility to chromosome 11 in humans: The HyperGEN Study. "Our results show strong evidence for linkage of a region of chromosome 11 with LV contractility in blacks and suggest that an important gene for impaired LV contractility is harbored in this region."

Systematic review: antihypertensive drug therapy in black patients. "The efficacy of beta-blockers in reducing systolic blood pressure and the efficacy of angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors in achieving diastolic blood pressure goals did not significantly differ from that of placebo..."

Prevalence of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy in a general population of young adults. Echocardiographic analysis of 4111 subjects in the CARDIA Study. Coronary Artery Risk Development in (Young) Adults. "Prevalence in men and women was 0.26:0.09%; in blacks and whites, 0.24:0.10%." Granted, the total number found was small.

Interactive Effect of Ethnicity and ACE Insertion/Deletion Polymorphism on Vascular Reactivity. "The ethnic difference was most pronounced in subjects heterozygous at the ACE I/D locus in which blacks had a markedly attenuated response to bradykinin compared with whites (F=41.0, P:<0.001).

The reason I sought these studies is because of the disparity in health outcomes between blacks and whites, especially in two of the three bigest causes of mortality, heart disease and stroke. These outcome studies always allude to latent racism or inferior treatment due to relative poverty, and always avoid any inherent genetic differences.
