CNN MARKS CHENEY: NETWORK FLASHES 'X' OVER VP'S FACE DURING LIVE SPEECH

**Exclusive**

At 11:04:45 AM ET Monday CNN was airing Vice President Dick Cheney's speech live from the American Enterprise Institute in Washington -- when a large black 'X' repeatedly flashed over the vice president's face!

The 'X' over Cheney's face appeared each time less than a second, creating an odd subliminal effect.

As this DRUDGE REPORT screen capture reveals, while one 'X' flashed over Cheney's face CNN ran a headline at the bottom of its screen: "CHENEY: I DO NOT BELIEVE IT IS WRONG TO CRITICIZE."

One top White House source expressed concern about what was aired over CNN.

"Is someone in Atlanta trying to tell us something?"

A CNN spokesman did not return repeated calls late Monday night.

But it was really stupid of them not to answer Drudge's calls today...

That's the kicker......why so long to answer a simple question if it was all innocent? Computer glitch, yeah sure.......

Here's a difference between two frames. It's almost impossible to read the hidden text.
The first two words look like "it is".
I could probably spend a few hours on this and process every frame. I'm not sure it's worth the trouble.

Wasn't it also CNN that had the "technical glitch" that gave Al Gore more split-screen space that George Bush during the debates in 2000 (to make Gore look bigger to the viewers)?

That's true. But, at the very least, the character generator had to be programmed to "flash" the text every 15 frames or so. And someone had to be monitoring the source, in order to perform the fade.

Programming a cg to flash takes about 3 keystrokes and can be done in less than a second. And I would venture to say that this cg defaults to 2 flashes per second. As I said, it's likely that someone in another control room was doing something with a CG and had it over some video, and that control room was accidentally 'punched up.' When I was doing production and setting up the CG I would put it over a video source (I usually used the net feed), as when the playback tapes for your production are stopped you generally lose sync and don't see the CG overlay properly.

I just went to CNN to watch the bar at the bottom of the screen. They run a graphic in the headline bar with the large CNN scrolling in from the right hand side of the screen to the left. There are also other graphics in the banner which may explain the weird "ghost" image. There doesn't seem to be any dark lettering over the banner though.

Someone should fly a toy plane into the satellite dish outside CNN headquarters and cause a minor disruption...

Unfortunately it appears no one has ever heard of any similar occurance of "fooling around" in thousands of hours of TV for thousands of viewers.

Although your explanation is plausible, it is not probable. This X is consistent with other behaviour in the media, and given that in millions of hours of viewing no one can think of a similar event - it appears intentional.

I would expect the only unintentional part of this story is that the people responsible will be caught.

If more frames are found, some of our more talented FReepers hopefully will do the over-lay. Other pictures/frames would have the same writing on the bottom, but other sections may be more visible, contrast may vary.

I believe it was done intentionally, but I don't think the graphic overlay was created specifically for the job. Instead, I think someone mucked around with a piece of equipment knowing that it would generate the black "X". This gives them plausible deniability after the fact.

That is, the black "X" image is probably some valid output of the device, indicating lack of signal or whatever, and the technician knew it could be made to do this. So he tweaked it a few times during the speech. When caught, he easily plays the "mistake" card.

"And I would venture to say that this cg defaults to 2 flashes per second."

It makes little sense to have a character generator that "defaults" to displaying text that no one can perceive with the naked eye.

In non-linear editing, an X is often imposed over a video transition that has not been rendered yet.
