CHERKESSK, Russia - Security officials here in Karachayevo-Cherkessia, a restive republic on Russia's mountainous southern border, have a secret list of people who are kept under scrutiny.
At a mosque in Nalchik, in the Caucasus, Muslims offer evening prayers. Those who pray outside "official" mosques are often harassed.
Muslims in Russia Those on it have committed no crimes, but are considered suspect because they are Muslims who practice Islam outside of the state's sanctioned mosques.
Ovod Golayev is on that list. He lives in Karachayevsk, a city nestled in the foothills of the Caucasus, where he works for a tourism company that organizes skiing and hiking excursions. He wears his hair and beard long. He prays five times a day. He fasts during Ramadan, which is unusual here.
In recent weeks, he said, the police have detained him four times, twice in one day.
Mr. Golayev, 36, said the Islam he observes is opposed to violence, but he warned that the mistreatment of believers was driving men like him to desperation.
"They will pressure me enough," he said, "and then I will blow somebody's head off."

Obviously, not a "true" card carrying, Kill all Infidels, muslim.
What's a Soviet?
He musta' overlooked the permissible beheading clauses in the Koran.
Hey NYT...Douarty can;t go home again.
Do you mean Walter Duranty? I couldn't for the life of me connect "Douarty".
Yes I did, thanks for correcting.
Come think of it I wish Ivan the Terrible or other bad*** Russia Tsars were around they know how lay smackdown on Muslums BIG TIME
OH JB HONEYYYY
The New York Times experiences a Freudian slip...
Back in the USSR! Ah, those were the good ol' days...
"They will pressure me enough," he said, "and then I will blow somebody's head off."
Um, I thought "the Islam he observes is opposed to violence"?

So much for not believing in violence! Obviously he believes in making violent threats at least.
Well, if one is harassed too much, one will snap - everything [and everyone] has its/one's limits. Similarly, one should not twist his words beyond breaking point. BTW, old Niccolo Machiavelli taught that people should be either coddled or exterminated, but that any middle course is pernicious and counterproductive [re: harassment].
Any questions?
That's assuming Ovad is an innocent detainee.
At any rate, there seems to be no middle ground on Ovad's extreme reaction.
What could be the point in arresting a guy several times over couple weeks and then promptly releasing him - how else could he be arrested twice on the same day? This is harassment pure and simple. If he was scooped up for some legitimate reason, it would have taken them longer than that to sort it out.
I like it when so-called moderate muslims, who may be infected with the dormant version of the virus, slip up occasionally for the world to see, as today much of the world if only one mouse click away from the truth. Muslims like this guy know their ultimate duty is to islam, dawa, and other muslims.
In the end, it leads to the important question of who we can ultimately trust....
I love that...
Peace is islam only comes when muslims are completely obeyed (if then).
