Michael Fisk is a street fighting man. And the street he's fighting is named Dicks.

Fisk, who lives on Dicks Street in the Los Angeles suburb of West Hollywood, has gone to city hall to get the road's name changed -- saying that its slang meaning has made life difficult for homeowners.

"Since we moved in four years ago its just become such a hassle," Fisk said. "It's embarrassing. Something definitely needs to be changed. I realize that it's a man's name, but words change meaning, and this one has."

Dicks Street is in a neighborhood that fancies first names for its roads, with Keith and Norma among the choices.

Fisk, who collected signatures on a petition from more than half of the residents on Dicks Street, has so far been met with a lack of interest from city officials, who say that changing a street name is too much work.

He sounds like a real dick to me. I'd say the place he lives is aptly named! LOL

More than half the residents want the name changed. They pay property taxes to the city. Who the Hell are they to tell their bosses (the taxpayers) that changing the name is 'too much work'?

we have hell and climax here in MI.

Heh, heh. In my traveling days, I used to call our service coordinator every time I was going to pass that way just to let her know that I was "approaching Climax".

I heard a story about a 19th century German Jew who, like all of his people, was forced to get a last name . (Prior to that in Germany , they used (eg) Isaac son of Abraham, then Isaac's son would be Jacob son of Isaac, and so on, just like in ancient Israel.) This was inconvenient for the German bureaucracies, so last names were mandated. Apparently, the Jews weren't allowed to choose the names, that was the province of the bureaucrats. That's where names like Rosenfeld (Rosefield) Goldstein (Goldstone) etc, came from. Petty bureaucrats used the opportunity to inflict ugly or even obscene names on their victims, out of a sick sense of humor or hatred of Jews. This was also a great opportunity for bribery, as the victims would pay large sums to get nicer names.

Anyhow, one Jewish man wound up with the name Shweissehund, which means Bloodhound. Somebody asked him why on earth he didn't pay up and get a decent name. And the man replied,"Are you kidding!?! It took all my savings to buy that W!!!!" (Shiess Hund, meaning roughly , uh, dung or feces dog.)

Too funny, where I grew up in Michigan there was an intersection of Dix and Champaign.
"Hey, that girl lives on dicks and champaign" was popular in high school.

Didn't he think of this before he moved in?

Probably about as much as the people in my area who bought houses in the takeoff area of the local airport and now gripe about the horrific noise.

You'd think that Dicks would be a popular street name in West Hollywood.

When asked: "How do you spell Cox?", the best reply is "Just like it sounds."
